DIET: review and short description

One of the existing approaches to grid middleware is to use the servers available in different administrative domains through the traditional client-server or Remote Procedure Call (RPC) paradigms. Network-Enabled Servers (NES) implement this model, also known as Grid-RPC. Clients submit compute requests to a scheduler whose goal is to find a server available on the resources.

The aim of the DIET project is to develop a set of tools to build computer servers. Big problems can now be calculated over the internet thanks to Grid Computing Environments – such as Globus or Legion – or via cloud solutions – such as Amazon EC2. Since most current applications are numerical, the use of libraries such as BLAS, LAPACK, ScaLAPACK or PETSc is mandatory. Integrating such libraries into high-level applications that use languages like Fortran or C is far from easy. In addition, the computing power and memory requirements of such applications are of course not available on every workstation. So the RPC seems like a good candidate to build problem solving environments on the grid….

The DIET project is focused on the development of scalable middleware, with initial efforts focused on distributing the scheduling problem across multiple agents. DIET consists of a set of elements that can be used together to build applications using the Grid-RPC paradigm. This middleware can find a suitable server based on the information in the customer’s request (e.g. problem to be solved, size of data involved), the performance of the target platform (e.g. server load, available memory, communication performance) and the local availability of data stored during previous calculations. The scheduler is distributed using several collaborating hierarchies that are statically or dynamically connected (in a peer-2-peer way). Data management is provided to ensure that persistent data remains in the system for future reuse.

DIET is a grid computing software. As a middleware, DIET sits between the operating system (which handles the details of the hardware) and the application software (which handles the specific computational task).
