Don’t touch my tabs!: Review and Features
Did you know that whenever you click on a hyperlink that opens a page in a new tab, the new page can determine which page loads on the previous tab?
“Why is this bad for me?” This is how advertisers bother you to the full, or worse, how a hacker could replace the previous tab with a fake service login page that you navigate from when you link to a malicious web page.
“That’s not good! Now what?” The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) decided that something had to be created to prevent this, and the attribute ‘rel = noopener’ was born. This attribute can be added to any hyperlink to prevent the new window from accessing the previous window object.
“Sweet!” Well, here’s the catch: because they didn’t want to ‘break’ the internet, this became an optional feature that web developers and designers must add to every hyperlink to protect you. This means that trillions of hyperlinks that don’t give us this protection will have to be manually fixed, and let’s face it, this won’t happen.
‘Disconnect the internet? But … my safety! Well, they somehow have a point, since some web applications use this feature, it would destroy those web applications if they just changed the way hyperlinks work.
“So what now?” I have created a simple browser extension to solve this problem for you. When you add this extension to your browser, you just need to add the “rel = noopener” attribute to any hyperlink that opens a page in a new tab or window.
“But won’t this ‘break my internet’?” No! Because when a hyperlink points to a webpage hosted on the same domain name that you are on, it will NOT add the rel = noopener attribute. Neat huh?
“Does it do anything else?” No, that’s all! :]I just want to share this with the rest of the internet.
Prevent tabs opened by a hyperlink from hijacking the previous tab by adding the rel = noopener attribute to all hyperlinks (excluding hyperlinks from the same domain).
