Fluent: review and short description

Innovative: natural-sounding translations with genders and grammatical cases if necessary. Country-specific logic does not leak to other locale settings.

Powerful: date, time, and number format. Plural . Full two-way support. Custom formatters. Easy to read syntax.

Flexible: client and server side. Runtime translation and retranslation. Robust error handling. JS, Python, Rust implementations. Reply bonds. Upgradeable: Compatible with ICU and ECMA 402. Licensed under the Apache 2.0 License.

Why did we make Fluent?

Software localization was dominated by an outdated paradigm: translations that map one-to-one to the English copy. The grammar of the source language limits the eloquence of the translation.

We created Fluent to change this paradigm. Translators should be able to use the full expressive power of their language without asking the developers for permission. In Fluent, translations are asymmetrical. A simple string in English can refer to a complex translation in several variants in another language.

Fluent makes it possible to respond to the grammar and style of many languages, regardless of the source language. It happens on its own; the fact that one language benefits from more advanced logic does not require another localization to apply it. Each localization determines how complex the translation becomes.

A localization system for natural-sounding translations.
