MusiCAD: review and short description
The most important thing about music notation software should be the ability to easily produce high quality sheet music; enter music notes as easily as possible using PC keys, mouse or a MIDI keyboard. After that, it should allow you to print your scores in a way that makes you feel fit. Extracting individual parts from scores enhanced with chord symbols, lyrics, and so on should of course be a matter of a few keystrokes or mouse clicks, without having to update the score itself. It would be nice if keyed in scores would sound just like written, including grace notes, repeats, chords, dynamics or whatever….
If the score editor helps with arranging by creating an extra voice as the starting point for a true second voice, it would be a nice thing to do. The ability to transpose easily is a must. Converting a single part or an entire score should be as easy as a snap of the finger (“let’s play the Bb clarinet part with a saxophone in Eb”). Besides, MIDI facilities come in handy, as does percussion notation. In terms of music distribution, I am thinking about the need for printing (full score, partial extraction), graphics generation (BMP, JPG, PNG, PDF, Postscript), import and export of files (MIDI, ABC).
Fortunately, this is all accomplished with the music score editor MusiCAD 3. While MusiCAD is not freeware, it does not require payment for use with abc.
