Synchronator: review and short description
Synchronator brings bit-perfect volume control to Linux-based hi-fi systems. Allows you to control the volume level of your hi-fi amplifier from any Airplay, DLNA, OpenHome, MPD application or Roon and others
Technical background
Unlike many other operating systems in Linux, it is not uncommon for audio applications, such as MPD and Shairport, to allow audio data and mixer / volume data to be sent to different (audio) devices. By sending mixer data to a dummy / virtual sound card *, volume control can be turned on without touching the audio data. Synchronator in turn can synchronize that volume level with any hi-fi system / amplifier that can be controlled externally (RS232 / I2C / TCP). In addition, changes in the volume level on the amplifier side are synchronized back….
*) For Roon and the like, a dummy mixer is made for the actual audio device / dac instead.
Requirements for audio applications
The only requirement for audio applications is that Linux (Alsa) can control volume instead of an internal algorithm.
Known Supported Applications
Music Player Daemon (MPD) UPMPD (DLNA / OpenHome) Roon (RoonBridge, RoonServer) Shairport and derivatives (Airplay) Kodi (XBMC) (requires minor change in source code)
Requirements for hi-fi amplifiers
It is clear that a computer wants to control an amplifier, that amplifier must be controllable. Many amplifiers can be controlled via a serial connection (eg RS232, TTL, etc).
Synchronator supports serial (RS232, TTL, etc.), TCP and I2C connections. At the moment I2C devices can only be controlled, changes made at that end will not be synced back to Synchronator. If this functionality is of any use (I didn’t find one): post a request.
