Wikimedia Commons: review and short description
Wikimedia Commons is a media file repository that makes educational media content (images, sound, and video clips) in the public domain and in their native language available to everyone. It acts as a common repository for Wikimedia Foundation’s various projects, but you don’t have to belong to one of those projects to use media hosted here. The repository is not created and maintained by paid archivists, but by volunteers. The scope of Commons is outlined on the project scope pages.
Wikimedia Commons uses the same wiki technology as Wikipedia and anyone can edit it. Unlike media files uploaded to other projects, files uploaded to Wikimedia Commons can be embedded on pages of all Wikimedia projects without having to be uploaded there separately.
Wikimedia Commons, launched on September 7, 2004, reached the milestone of 1,000,000 uploaded media files on November 30, 2006 and currently contains 37,335,791 files and 124,528 media collections. More background information on the Wikimedia Commons project itself can be found in the General disclaimer, on the Wikipedia page on Wikimedia Commons and the corresponding page in Meta-wiki.
Unlike traditional media sources, Wikimedia Commons is free. Anyone may freely copy, use and modify any files here, as long as they follow the conditions specified by the author; this often means that the source and author(s) are properly credited and that copies/improvements are released to others under the same freedom. The license terms of each individual media file can be found on their description page. The Wikimedia Commons database itself and the texts contained in it are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License. More information about reuse can be found at Commons:Reuse of content outside Wikimedia and Commons:First steps/Reuse.
