Apple 's iOS 12 update did not make major changes to the on – board CarPlay system that had been in use for several years. But there are noticeable improvements: We support third party navigation applications. Yes, it is. In other words, you can now use Google Maps, Waze, or another CarPlay navigation app instead of the default Google Maps app.
Updates for iOS applications supporting CarPlay have been released on both Google Maps and Waze. I have been testing for about a week. Unfortunately, due to limitations of CarPlay and numerous bugs and performance issues, both Google Maps and Waze are not particularly interesting compared to Android Auto or Apple's Maps application.
Enabling Google Maps and Waze on CarPlay is as easy as installing the latest update from the mobile phone's App Store and connecting it to a car's compatible CarPlay CPU. Both apps are displayed as icons on the CarPlay home screen, and you can navigate by searching directions.
If you are using Apple Maps on CarPlay, Google Maps and Waze seem to be familiar to you. In fact, since Apple imposes many restrictions on the permissions of the CarPlay application, all information, buttons and options are distributed in the same way in all three applications in general. Google Maps and Waze have their own color schemes and other application-specific features, but not available with Apple Maps, but the main interface and instructions are displayed in the same way as Apple applications.
What you can not find in Google Maps or Waze is the ability to get directions via Siri by holding down the microphone button on the steering wheel, the Hey Siri voice command, or the home button on the screen carpenter. Apple limits Siri interaction to its own applications. So, you can not ask Siri to do something …
