Explore The Witcher and its Fantasy World

by Jones David

The Witcher started streaming on Netflix in 2019, starring Henry Cavill, Ana Chalotra, and Freya Alan to massive success. The streamers ate up the first eight episodes and were eagerly awaiting the next chapter. Now that the fantasy series is set to release its second season in 2021, it’s time for you to catch up on this massive franchise. With a franchise that consists of games, prequels, and sequels, you may be asking yourself, “Where do I begin?”

The starting point of any major production can seem a bit of a challenge. It’s like asking yourself where to get started on the Marvel Universe or Game of Thrones, for that matter. The Witcher feels like an answer to HBO’s Game of Thrones. There are several similarities between the two series as both of them are based on a fantasy world in which the characters embark on epic adventures. However, The Witcher’s world resembles the ‘Lord of the Rings’ more.

Do I need to read all the books in The Witcher series?

Let’s begin with the history of The Witcher and how it started. The epic saga was written by Andrzej Sapkowski, a Polish writer, who brought to life the Geralt of Rivia in his books. The monster hunter fraternizes with elves and other magical creatures in this story series that is power-packed with ancient customs, multiple timelines, and bard bangers!

The books were first published in 1993 and later translated to English, Chinese, German, French, Russian, and Spanish. There are seven books in the series, but you don’t have to start at the very beginning to familiarize yourself with the plot and the characters. You may do well enough by starting on ‘The Last Wish’ (1993), the book that the Netflix creators have based the series mostly on. Readers may then read up on ‘Sword of Destiny’ (1992) that expands Geralt’s relationship with Ciri, his adopted daughter.

Should I play The Witcher Games?

There are overall three versions for gamers to choose from: The Witcher (2007), The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings (2011), and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015). Users have the option to entirely skip out on the first two versions since they could be deemed a little too obsolete by today’s standards. The third version, however, is a masterpiece in role-playing and an excellent way to dive into the fantasy world. You may just enjoy slaying the monsters, or maybe you are looking for a witcher 3 romance guide to seduce the Geralt of Rivia; the possibilities are endless. By immersing themselves in the game, users can better understand the characters and their personalities in this fantasy realm.

Overall the Witcher franchise has been a massive hit. The books have a cult following in several European countries, and over 50 million video games have been sold globally. Not to mention, over 76 million households watched season 1 of the series! It’s high time you join the train and take a trip to the fantasy world created by elves from overseas.
