Lost reception? 7 ways to get better reception on your phone

by Jones David

There are several ways to solve the problem of poor phone connection. Many of them are quick and can be done at home.

When you can’t hear your voice or you have a bad connection, the first thing you shouldn’t do is necessarily do something. The problem may be temporary. But most likely, you will need a unified communications provider. Try a few more ways offered by Uctel.

1. Use airspace

Sometimes you can fix the difficulty simply by activating Airplane Mode from your device’s menu. This will disconnect the data connection, and exiting flight mode will reopen it, possibly fixing the concern.

On Android, flight mode is found in the menu, which is revealed by swiping down from the top of the screen. On iPhone, the same setting can be found in the Control Center, which is revealed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

2. Restart the phone

You can also restart your phone. When the working memory is empty, and the operating system is loaded from scratch, a connection issue may be on the way.

On Android, the option to restart your phone appears on the screen by holding the power button long enough.

On iPhone, you have to close the phone first. On iPhone X and 11, press either the volume down button or the side button until the slider for power off appears. Swipe right to turn off the phone. Wait until you are sure the phone has switched off, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen to switch it on again.

Hold the side button on older iPhones (or the top button on even older models) until the option to power off appears.

3. Check your SIM card

The sim card in your phone is your connection to the mobile network. Removing the card and gently cleaning the gold side with a soft, dry cloth may help with some problems.

See your phone’s instructions for removing and replacing the SIM card. A good precaution is to switch off your phone first, even if you don’t need to open the back cover to remove the SIM card. Touch an electrically conductive surface first to discharge any static electricity charge. This can damage the electronics.

4. Call the operator

Sometimes a user is powerless with their connectivity issue. If this is the case, you should contact your telecom operator to help you get to the bottom of the concern.

Uctel says that when customer feedback accumulates in a particular area, the operator’s customer service department will request clarification from either network operations or engineering.

If it turns out to be a coverage issue and not, for example, an equipment failure, a solution is planned. This could be, for example, reorienting the base station antenna, which is one of the most accessible solutions and can be done within a few days. Uctel team says it has reoriented antennas, but not just based on one customer feedback.

Sometimes, improving coverage can even require a new mast, which can take years to put in place, with permits and construction.

5. Change your phone

The phone itself can also be the cause of poor reception. A recent study found significant differences in reception between different models of smartphones. But don’t make an impulsive purchase if you don’t know the cause of the problem.

6. Build right

Today, the materials used in new buildings are increasingly interfering with sound quality. They are energy-efficient, but this can also mean that mobile phone signals are poorly transmitted through these materials.

So some compromises may be necessary. According to Uctel, the situation can be improved, for example, by choosing windows that take account of the signal’s passage through the structure.

7. Get an outdoor blind

If renovating your house to make it suitable for a mobile phone is not an option, one way is to use a so-called outdoor socket. It converts the signal outside the building to a Wi-Fi signal inside but requires a new phone to make calls over a Wi-Fi network. In this case, voice is transmitted over the Wi-Fi network instead of the mobile network if the former has poor coverage.

If the wireless Internet (WLAN/Wi-Fi) is not working well, please follow these steps

The wireless connection (WLAN/Wi-Fi) is very sensitive to interference in the working environment, and the cause of poor performance is usually too weak a signal between the modem and the computer. The wireless network signal is most affected by the distance between the modem/router, the computer, and the WLAN channel used.
