The offices of large technology companies will probably be fairly quiet until the end of the year like Google and Facebook join Amazon and Microsoft to have their employees work from home for the rest of the year. Last week, Amazon announced its plans to have headquarters staff working from home until “at least October 2”, while Microsoft said two days ago that staff had the opportunity to work remotely until the end of October. Today, both Google and Facebook announced that remote work is likely to continue for the rest of 2021.
Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year, working from home has become the new norm for millions of people around the world. Thanks to the rapid actions of remotely working for software companies, this transition has been fairly smooth for most, suggesting that when lockdowns end and the world returns to some semblance of normality, the concept of a nine-to-five-day workday in a central office may well be a thing of the past.
