The 10 Mistakes Most Amazon FireStick Users Make (Unknowingly) Tutorial and Steps
So here we discuss the The 10 Mistakes Most Amazon FireStick Users Make (Unknowingly), and after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about The 10 Mistakes Most Amazon FireStick Users Make (Unknowingly).
In this post, we’ll discuss the most common FireStick errors users make and how to avoid them.
FireStick has been my favorite streaming device for a while now. It’s easy to set up up and exceptionally user-friendly. However, my experience has not always been great.
I’m not blaming the device. Most of the issues I have faced are largely due to the mistakes I have made or some important aspects that I have overlooked. Fortunately, I have identified and corrected the FireStick errors I have made over the years.
You don’t have to make the same mistakes I did. In this article, I’m listing the most common FireStick mistakes you are likely to make and how to avoid them easily.
Attention FireStick Users: Read before you go any further
Governments and ISPs around the world monitor the online activities of their users. If you stream copyrighted content on your Fire TV Stick, you could be in serious trouble. Currently, your IP is visible to everyone. I highly recommend you get a good FireStick VPN and hide your identity so your movie viewing experience doesn’t take a bad turn.
I use ExpressVPN that’s the fastest and most secure VPN in the industry. It is very easy to install on any device, including Amazon Fire TV Stick. It also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you don’t like their service, you always ask for a refund. ExpressVPN also has a special deal where you get 3 months free and save 49% on annual plan.
Here are the reasons why you should always use a VPN.

Most common mistakes FireStick Users make
You may already have some of the errors on your own. However, go through this list to find out if you missed out for a better FireStick experience.
1. Create an Amazon account during FireStick installation
If you want to avoid being asked to provide your credit card information every time you try to download an app on your FireStick, make sure you don’t sign up for an Amazon account during the FireStick installation.
To use your FireStick, you’ll need to sign in with an Amazon account. When you set up your FireStick for the first time, you get a window titled “Sign in with your Amazon account” and you get the following two options:
- I already have an Amazon account
- I’m new to Amazon
If you already have an Amazon account, all you have to do is choose the first option. If you don’t have an Amazon account, you’ll probably choose the “I’m new to Amazon” option
Don’t DO THAT!
It is highly recommended that you create an Amazon account on a computer or mobile before you set it up up your FireStick. And during installation, choose the 1st option.
I’ll tell you why!
Many users complain that FireStick won’t let them download apps from the Amazon Store – even the free one – unless they’ve updated the credit card information in their Amazon account. But that’s not necessary if you create an Amazon account in advance and not during installation.
I use an Amazon account on one of my FireSticks which neither has Prime subscription nor any credit card info. I’ve never been asked for a credit card for app downloads.
Make sure you have a valid billing address in your Amazon account and that you Enabled 1-Click Purchase.
To have a credit-card-free FireStick experience, follow these simple steps:
2. Keep the default privacy settings
Your privacy is compromised and sometimes quite shameless. Although FireStick is a great streaming device, Amazon uses this device to track your online activity.
With FireStick’s default privacy settings, Amazon can:
- Collect device usage data
- Collect app usage data
- Perform data monitoring
Unsuspecting users don’t even know that their streaming activities are constantly monitored. Ideally, Amazon should clearly let users know about these settings and should first take permission before enabling them. But that’s not the case.
Fortunately, you disable data collection and data monitoring through the FireStick settings. Follow the following steps:
1. Select Settings firestick home Screen
2. Open Preferences
3. Click Privacy settings
4. Turn off or off the following:
- Data about device usage
- Collect app usage data
5. Press the back now button once and go back to Preferences
Click Data monitoring
6. Turn off Data monitoring on the next window
3. Do not connect to a VPN when using cheap or free streaming services
By changing your privacy preferences within the FireStick settings, you’ve prevented Amazon from (hopefully) keeping track of your online activities.
However, it’s not just Amazon that’s interested in what you do online or what you’re streaming. Your ISP and government are also likely to keep an eye on you.
If you really want to protect your privacy and ensure that your online and streaming activities are not monitored, it is highly recommended that you use a VPN.
A good FireStick VPN encrypts your connection and hides your IP address from those who might be watching. It will redirect your online activities via a secure server and ensure that you are completely anonymous on the Internet.
I’ve been using ExpressVPN for years and can safely say it’s the best VPN for FireStick. ExpressVPN is the fastest VPN and easily the most reliable in terms of privacy and security.
ExpressVPN offers a 49% discount on the annual subscription with 3 months of additional service. You also get a 30-day money-back guarantee on all its plans.
Here’s how to go completely private and secure with ExpressVPN on FireStick:
1. Sign up For ExpressVPN HERE in a web browser on a computer or mobile
2. Go back to your FireStick; Select Search on the home screen in the upper-left corner
3. Search for the ExpressVPN FireStick app; follow the online instructions to install the app
4. Sign in with your ExpressVPN account you created during sign-in
5. Connect to an ExpressVPN server
Get started with your FireStick with complete peace of mind
4. Don’t unplug a VPN before you burn your FireStick
Most FireStick VPNs, including ExpressVPN, offer the option to connect automatically at startup. This means they automatically connect to the same server when you turn on your FireStick when you’ve turned it off while you’re still connected to the VPN server.
I think it’s a useful option. You don’t have to reconnect to a VPN every time you restart your device. You also don’t have to worry about forgetting to connect to a VPN after the device reboots.
However, there is a problem with FireStick that messes up with the date and time of the device when you turn it off while the VPN is connected.
If your FireStick displays the wrong date and time (say 2 days old date), it’s likely to have been caused.
To make sure this doesn’t happen, turn off the VPN before turning off your FireStick.
However, if you’re not bothered by the incorrect date or time, I’d say keep the VPN on.
5. Don’t confirm streaming restrictions in hotels
When I’m traveling with my FireStick, I always check with the hotel if they don’t have streaming restrictions in place.
Many users, including myself, have experienced this problem. Most hotels offer free Wi-Fi connectivity. However, they restrict streaming on their Wi-Fi network or turn off the HDMI port to prevent guests from streaming.
The hotels have these restrictions to avoid too much burden on their Wi-Fi connection. However, there are many hotels that have no such restrictions.
If I plan to stream on my FireStick during the trip, before I book the hotel, call or email them and confirm whether they restrict streaming or not.
6. Do not unsubscribe your lost Firestick
In the first part, I said you were. how to use your FireStick with a non-Prime Amazon account and withall credit card information on file.
However, I also have a FireStick with a Prime Amazon account with a credit card as its default payment method.
The advantage of using a credit carded Amazon account is that you don’t have to enter your payment information every time you want to buy a paid app or service. The downside is that if you lose your device and someone gets hold of it, they can download and use paid apps and your credit card will be charged.
So, how can you prevent this? Easily!
The moment you realize you’ve lost your FireStick, make sure you unseed it immediately. Here’s how you do it:
This will remove your Amazon account from your FireStick and ensure that no one abuses it.
7. Keeping your TV far from the router (or vice versa)
If you’re buffering on FireStick, be the first to check that your device is receiving the correct Wi-Fi signals.
Wi-Fi signal strength is the key to the buffer-free streaming experience and it depends on the distance between your FireStick (or TV) and the router/modem.
Most routers can provide a decent signal strength for up up to 30-35 feet. The closer the router is to your FireStick, the better the signal strength will be.
First, check the wi-fi signal strength on your FireStick. If it’s weak, use a Wi-Fi extender or move your router closer to the TV.
Here’s how to check the internet signal strength:
1. Go to the settings on your FireStick from the home Screen
2. Click Network
3. Select your Wi-Fi connection
You could Signal strength on the right
8. Keep cache as a treasure
Most apps create a cache on your FireStick. The cache is stored in FireStick storage. You know your FireStick storage is ridiculously limited.
Over time, the collective cache buildup for all apps becomes considerably large and eats up a large part of your storage space.
Low storage can cause all kinds of problems. It can slow down your device. It can also cause buffer problems while streaming.
Therefore, it is highly recommended to keep cleaning up the cache from time to time.
Unfortunately, there is no way to remove the cache for all apps together. You have to do it individually for each app.
To remove the cache on your device, follow these steps:
1. Go to FireStick Settings of the home Screen
2. Click Applications
3. Manage installed applications
4. Click the app for which you want to remove the cache
5. Click Clear Cache
9. Do not enable parental controls
Parental Controls setting restricts access to videos, purchases, and certain types of content.
While parental controls are usually intended to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content and making unapproved purchases, they restrict other users just as much.
By enabling parental controls, you can secure all purchases, secure app launches with PINs, and impose display restrictions on certain types of Amazon Prime content.
Amazon Prime content is limited by the following categories (with Parental Controls enabled):
- General (geschiks for all ages): Unlimited/enabled by default
- Family (Suitable for children from 7 years): Unlimited/enabled by default
- Teen (13+): Restricted/pin-protected
- Young adults (16+): Restricted/pin-protected
- Adult (18+): Restricted/pin-protected
Turn on parental controls during the FireStick installation. If you didn’t, here’s how to do that at any time later:
1. Go to FireStick Settings
2. Click Preferences
3. Click Parental controls
4. Click Parental controls Again
5. Enter a 5-digit PIN
7. You’ll see this prompt when the PIN is set up. Click Ok
