Rega Planar 1 review: Rega met the budget turntable problem in 2006 with their entry-level P1 turntable, providing the budding vinyl enthusiast an approach to be part of the Rega camp with a brand new table and Ortofon OM5e cartridge for only $400. Whereas Rega has at all times been probably the greatest values going in turntables, inflation, and world currency markets have taken their toll in every single place. I keep in mind buying my first Planar 3 turntable (back in 1979, without cartridge) for $389. Those were the days.
The P1 was a sturdy seller, although the table did draw criticism for its MDF platter, which did not yield the most powerful wow and flutter specs. Many P1 owners spent an additional $65 and immediately upgraded into one glass platter that used to come on the older variations of the P2, with a particular enhancement.
The originator of Rega Roy Gandy is a mechanical engineer toward the core and is always looking for a way becoming promote his products. When I visited the Rega factory last summer and again this spring, Gandy made it a point to inform me how much thought goes into his entry-level turntable. (Although he wasn’t spilling the beans in regards to the RP1 in March…) “Each fifty cents that you merely consume to that price level is a problem, and it’s always a nice exercise to see just how much efficiency could be integrated into the ultimate design.”
Design
For the Rega RP1, every little thing has been stripped back to provide an extremely glossy and classy minimalist deck, free from most of the elaborations provided on competitor brands. By slicing back on the nonessentials, it has allowed Rega to place the financial savings into higher high-quality parts, together with a newly developed hand assembled RB101 tonearm. Comparable in looks to the Rega RB100 tonearm in the P1, this brand applies the advanced Hi-Tec design to scale back its weight significantly for higher cartridge maturity. Each one-piece construction keeps resonance to the modest least, and as the efficiency of installation, the Ortofon OM5e drive electromagnet cartridge which is pre-fitted making the Rega RP1 a flurry over set up. All element are constructed to a huge standard, none more so that a new extremely low vibration motor, which might not be out of place on a turntable at many times the price.

Setup
Unpacking an RP-1 was like seeing an old friend. I’ve unpacked and repacked several dozens of Rega record players within some years also, this one lasts with no entirely different: Neither Rega’s packing materials themselves— some cardboard bits, three Styrofoam inserts, some layers of translucent red tape—nor the way they’re put collectively have changed in over 30 years.
CONCLUSION
Not every turntable is equal. At slightly above the cost of other comparative turntables and below the weight of its competitors, Rega – RP1 Turntable provides a refreshing simplicity to what can otherwise be a sophisticated hobby and way of life to get into.
