The Best Spider-Man Games Ever

We are all extremely in love with Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood. We respect Wallcrawler so much that we’ve already listed the best Spider-Man creates a better game character. But what if Spidey does show up in games? Well, they can’t be called the best games of all time, but it’s not hard to rank the best Spider-Man games ever created. (By the way, never forget the hyphen in Spider-Man. Write Spider-Man and everyone will think you’re a poser.)

After reviewing more than 30 years of video games, we’ve narrowed down Spider-Man’s best Digital Adventures to these chosen titles. We’ve included both the solo game and the cast of the ensemble, and for the purposes of ranking this list, it makes a lot of sense to focus on the Spider-Man myths. So even if Peter Parker is a small player in a big game, expect this title to rank slightly lower than another better title that delves into Spidey’s long history. We start with…

amazing spider man

One of the best spiderman games is made by the amazing and amazing spiderman. Returning to an open world again for the first time in years, The Amazing Spider-Man offers the best open world version of Manhattan ever seen in a Spidey title. It also earned extra bonus points for being set after the movie, telling an origin story not unlike what Spider-Man is about to do on PS4.

Spider-Man: The Video Game (1991)

This arcade title was your classic 90s arcade game up, created during Sega’s heyday with bright colors, fluid animations and genuine spoken dialogue that really brought the comics to life. Technically, it felt like a re-mapping of other arcade fighters, but the platform action moments made the whole experience even more special. We also loved the fact that so many Spider-Man enemies got in the way, including Venom and Doctor Doom from the Fantastic Four.

Spider-Man and Poison: Maximum Carnage (1994)

Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage reached a point where Venom appeared as the latest Spider-Man villain in the comics. Because of that, this particular game has gained huge popularity. In this series, Venom becomes something of a hero, joining forces with Spider-Man to fight Carnage, who was once Venom’s progeny.

It has the same name as the comic book series it was based on and the dedication to the source material has always been seriously impressive, making it look like the comic book was coming to life before you.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (2000)

So technically it’s not a Spider-Man game, but sometimes the web-wielding hero is better off in a role where he’s surrounded by his Marvel buddies. Marvel vs Capcom 2 is one of the best fighting games of all time and Spidey’s appearance made this series an entry to be remembered very well. It may not have a story, but Spidey’s over-movement ensured that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 made our list of the best Spider-Man games of all time.

Spider-Man 2: The Game (2004)

Spider-Man 2: The Game was the first time we really got to revolve around a living, vibrant Manhattan. Developer Treyarch saw the success GTA III had with its sandbox world and decided to do the same for Spider-Man 2: The Game. It certainly doesn’t compare to today’s open world, but nothing can beat the feeling of swinging through Manhattan for the first time.

Ultimate Spider-Man (2005)

Ultimate Spider-Man was a direct sequel to the legendary Spider-Man 2: The Game, and developer Treyarch has revamped everything for Spidey’s next adventure. Thanks to the adoption of the cel-shaded style, the world got bigger, with more personality and even more beautiful. Because of that, it looks like the game jumped straight from the pages of a comic book, and the story was written by the writer of Spider-Man final Brian Michael Bendis then looked genuinely authentic.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows (2008)

There are so many adventures of Spider-Man that it was difficult to define the first three. But what a list of the best Spider-Man games is without the presence of Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

What the game did was bring together all the elements of the famous Spider-Man comics, a brilliantly rendered version of Manhattan, with Spider-Man power, world exploration and a supporting cast. It didn’t do well critically, but it attracted a lot of fans and will continue to be one.

Spider-Man: Broken Dimensions (2010)

While it’s not the best game of all time, at times it feels like it’s trying to break four different Spider-Man games into one big game, including Marvel Universe Spidey, Ultimate Spider-Man, 2099. There are sections devoted to Spider-Man . and Noir Spidey respectively, all with different play styles.

Despite that, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions pays for a serious fan service, celebrating the Spider-Man story with great voice and dialogue talent, a huge cool gallery and sometimes compelling gameplay.

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 (2011)

Okay, okay, it’s a bit of a scam to have two Marvel vs. titles. Capcom on this list, but Capcom continues to take them out of the park with these crossover titles. And they’re 10 years apart, so it doesn’t matter.

Like Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is the best fighting game in its class, especially when it comes to Spider-Man. The game features more of our friendly red and blue heroes than any other fighting game, including alternate costumes and entire levels in honor of Spider-Man and Peter Parker.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 (2013)

Everyone loves seeing their favorite Marvel characters like Lego mini figs, but it’s even better when you play with them on an amazing Lego adventure. What made Lego Marvel Super Heroes such a great Spider-Man game was that it featured 180+ characters from every corner of the Marvel universe, from the X-Men to Iron Man, along with multiple iterations of the web sniper hero, all of them adorable. With the addition of Traveller’s Tales Animation.

Despite its childlike appeal, Lego Marvel Super Heroes also had a huge open-world Manhattan, with plenty of challenges to explore and a main story filled with fantastically silly antics.
