Guide: Best Dictionary Extensions for Chrome Browser

Not many people know this, but Macs have a built-in dictionary that can be accessed from anywhere. All you need to do is hover over the word and tap the trackpad with three fingers. From here, you can also reference more material from Wikipedia and see which word is used in different contexts.

Once you use this on a Mac, it becomes addictive. So much so that when you switch to a Windows PC or a Linux machine, you start to miss it.

Now, at least in Chrome, you can get the same functionality in a somewhat similar way. If you’re one of the modern day digital nomads who live and breathe in Chrome, this might be all you need.

How these extensions work

Below, I’ll talk about three different extensions that do the same thing, but in a slightly different way. If you’re already using a Mac and for some reason still want this functionality, there is a way to add triggers.

For example, if you press the Cmd or Ctrl key and double-click / double-tap the word, the appropriate extension will be called and you will see the meaning of the word in a balloon.

You don’t have to go with this trigger binding, of course. But it is a good way to avoid accidental searches.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about the extensions.

1. Vocapp

Vocapp is probably the most feature rich extension here. It looks really good – it’s clearly inspired by the pop-up of Mac’s dictionary, but it’s good at modernizing it.

You can choose a trigger on the settings page. The extension is currently in beta, and the selling point is that it doesn’t look alone up definitions, it helps you build your vocabulary. The extension requires you to create an account to use all words you look up so you can go back and visit them again. I hope Mac will integrate this in the future.

2. Look up dictionary

Dictionary lookups are as easy as they come. There is no bling in it. Just a pop-up, a trigger, and a plain text definition.

3. Google Dictionary

Google Dictionary is another solid contender. Like Vocapp, it will keep a history of words you look up but there isn’t much you can do with it except download a copy of it. The extension, like the one above, supports trigger keys, but they didn’t work for me.

To view a definition after highlighting or double-clicking a word, I had to click the Google Dictionary extension buttonI hope this is a bug on my end and not the extension’s fault as it is one of the highest rated extensions in the Chrome Web Store.
