Guide: Best Websites to Compress Images Without Losing Quality

If you have a website or work for a website, you know the importance of images being small in size. Page load times, which can sometimes even affect a visitor’s decision to stay on the page, can depend on how well images are optimized.

Fortunately, there are pretty good tools that can help you optimize your images with ease, without any loss of quality. You just have to know where to look.

Not compromising on quality is paramount, as showing your visitors images that don’t look good can also cause you to lose them.

The following websites will help you accomplish both of these things in a simple and user-friendly way. So, without further ado, let’s see what these sites can do (there are some good desktop tools, of course, like RIOT).

To get a better idea of the power of these websites, I decided to use two files: a JPG and a PNG (the same image in different formats). Depending on the file formats the respective website can work with, I have used both or just one of them. The JPG was 255 kilobytes in size, while the PNG is 2.54 megabytes.

The resolution for both files was 1920×1040.

1. TinyPNG.com

A personal favorite of mine and a site that does a great job. As the name says, it is only for PNG files.

TinyPNG uses smart compression to make PNG files smaller without much visible quality loss. Personally, I’m not sure I can tell the difference between the source image and the resulting image most of the time.

Small Png

To use it, you can just drop your PNG on the space provided on the website or you can click on that space and upload them. Once uploaded, the site works its magic and you can download the final result.

In my case, the 2.7 megabytes file has turned into a 984.5 kilobytes file. I tried to compare the two images but couldn’t find much difference.

2. Webresizer.com

This tool supports GIF, JPG and PNG files. It does the same thing: it uses lossy algorithms to shrink your image size.

Start by clicking Resize Photos Now and you’ll see that it can offer a little more. You can crop images, make them sharper, add a border, or even add hue, exposure or contrast.

You can also decide how much loss of quality you feel comfortable with (in the case of JPG images).

Cool Tip Remember that Web Resizer will also resize your image, but you can type in the width to avoid that.

Web resizer Png

In the case of my PNG file, it didn’t do much as you can see in the image above. However, it made my JPG file 8% smaller, from 255 kilobytes to 233.

Nevertheless, it deserves an honorable mention for the possibilities it offers. If you want a more in-depth editing of web images, try the Google+ Image Editor, which can also add HDR effects.

3. CompressJPEG.com / CompressPNG.com

CompressJPEG and CompressPNG are sister sites, with the exact same interface. With each of them you can queue up up up to 20 files at once. They can be deleted or you can click Select files button

CompressJPEG can also compress BMP and PNG files, but they are converted to JPEG first. The sister site also supports BMP, ICO, GIF and JPG files, but converts them to its preferred format first.

Compress Jpeg

Once you’ve clicked Upload Queue and your files have finished uploading, click the thumbnail of the image you want to adjust and you can compare the original and compressed image and determine the amount of compression you agree with. After that, click on Compress (you can even zoom in and out to see the effects).

Compress Jpeg2

I went with 80 as that was the default. My 255 KB JPEG file has been compressed to 189 KB, while the 2.5 megabyte PNG file will now load much faster, at only 959 KB. No loss of quality here either.

4. Smush.IT

Owned by the good folks at Yahoo!, Smush.it claims to remove unnecessary bytes from images without damaging them. According to the FAQ page, it can work with JPG, PNG and GIF images.

The interface is nothing to write about home about, but it gets the job done. On the Uploader tab, choose the images you want and click Smush.

Smush it

Once you do this, your images will be uploaded and, after processing is complete, you will get a results screen (just like below) with details underneath.

Smush It 2

You can download your optimized images as an archive, or you can click the link in the detail table. Smush.it reduced my 255 KB JPG image to 233 KB, but told me it didn’t find any savings for the PNG. I tried another PNG, which was 938 kilobytes in size, and managed to reduce it to 469. I think its algorithms only work in certain situations.

There you have it. If you need to optimize or resize images for use on a website, there are plenty of great ways to do that.
