In, Facebook first introduced stories, known as Messenger Day, in the standalone messaging app Messenger. Later stories also made their debut on Facebook. Fortunately, things changed when Facebook turned Messenger Day into Stories and allowed cross-posts between Facebook and Messenger. However, that doesn’t mean that both stories are the same. There are many differences between them.

Cross posting

The biggest confusion everyone has about these two stories is what happens when you post on one of the stories. When you post a story to Facebook, it will automatically be posted to Messenger as well. While you can’t prevent that, you can change the privacy and set it to your liking.

The Facebook Stories are available to view and format mobile apps and desktop. You can also view and create them in the Facebook Lite app, a stripped-down version of the Facebook app that uses less data and works on low-memory devices.

On the contrary, Messenger stories are available on the mobile apps only. They cannot be accessed through Messenger’s website or the Lite app.

How to Access

On mobile apps, Facebook stories are available at the top of the feed. On the website, the stories are at the top right.

While Messenger Stories are also present at the top of Messenger, they are a bit confusing. That’s because Messenger not only shows the stories, but also people who are online. To distinguish between the two, profiles with a story have a blue circle around the profile picture and the online contacts have a small green dot.

Typing mode

If you are familiar with WhatsApp status, there is a typing mode where you simply enter text on a plain background. A similar feature is available for Facebook and Messenger stories.

While it can be accessed directly from the Facebook app, you have to tap the Type Mode icon in Messenger to open it.

Here is how to do it. In the Facebook app, tap on the Add to story option present on it home screen of the app. The app will take you to typing mode. Enter your text here and change the background color.

To open it on Messenger, tap the Your Story option followed by the Camera icon. Then tap the color palette icon.

Filters and effects

While both offer filters and effects, Facebook Stories are way ahead of Messenger Stories. You get a lot of filters and effects in the Facebook app. However, Messenger allows you to apply a face filter to any old photo. Which feature missing from Facebook.

Emoji brush

The story feature is incomplete if you cannot draw on it. While you can draw on photos with both apps, Messenger offers the ability to draw with emojis. The feature is present under the brush.

Crop and rotate

Sometimes you need to crop certain parts to remove them from the story frame. Unfortunately, most stories, including those on Facebook, don’t let your photos crop or rotate. For that, you have to use a third party app or the built-in gallery app. Messenger offers both, however features

When you take a new photo or select an existing one, you can rotate and crop it. Interestingly, in addition to free cropping, you can also choose from the given dimensions to crop your photo.

Initially, Facebook launched stories with short-lived direct messaging feature where the messages automatically disappear as soon as you check them. Later the feature was demolished. Now when a person replies to your Facebook or Messenger story, the comments will appear in the Messenger.

Highlights

While stories last only twenty-four hours, there is no other way to extend that period. To make them stay longer or indefinitely, Facebook lets you make highlights of them. It’s a lot like the Instagram highlights feature

The highlights can only be accessed via Facebook Stories. So when you post a story on Messenger, you have to open it in the Facebook app to add it to a highlight.

Privacy

Facebook and Messenger offer five privacy settings for your stories. You can set it to Public, where anyone on Facebook who visits your profile can see it or limit it to Facebook friends and Messenger connections. Messenger connections are the people you have interacted with at least once.

You can limit your stories to only Facebook friends. And if you are a private person and want to limit your stories to a limited number of people, you should use the Custom option. Finally, you can hide your stories from your Facebook friends or Messenger connections with the Hide my story from option.

While you can set the privacy settings for stories in either app, the settings are applied to both platforms. Any privacy setting chosen for Messenger, for example, also applies to Facebook Stories and vice versa. So choose carefully.

Mute stories

If you don’t want to see stories from specific people, you can mute them to hide them from your Facebook feed or Messenger featureWhen you mute people, the stories don’t appear in the story box or slideshow. Again, although the setting is available separately in both apps, it is the same setting. So if you mute a story on Messenger, it will also be muted on Facebook.

Are they really different?

Yes and no. While some features especially the editing options are different for both, the basic functionalities linger. The stories are automatically posted to the other platform.

Speaking of cross-platform, while you can easily post stories from Instagram to Facebook, you can’t from Facebook to Instagram. But that’s okay because each has a different audience.
