Guide: Fix ‘Annotations Not Moving With Images’ Issue in Microsoft OneNote
Microsoft OneNote is one of the best note taking apps, and for all the right reasons. And while it’s chock-full of useful features, it lacks an important one: the ability to annotate images. Wait, you can annotate images in OneNote. Yes, but the moment you move the image, annotations remain and don’t move with the image as they should.
OneNote has a glaring issue where the annotations are added as an overlay. They are not part of the image file itself. So when you move the image, the annotations don’t move, which leads to various adjustments and annoying note-taking.
Here are some solutions to fix that problem until Microsoft releases a suitable update.
1. Use an extension: Awesome Screenshot
Why not annotate the picture before saving it to OneNote? Awesome Screenshot is a free screenshot extension for all Chromium based browsers. That means it works on Chrome, Edge and Brave. You can cut an entire web page, only the visible part of the page, take scrolling screenshots or save images with just a few clicks.
After taking a screenshot, you will see many annotation options on a handy toolbar.
You can crop the picture, add arrows and text, blur sensitive areas, highlight important areas, add emojis and some other shapes, add numbers to show steps and much more. There is also an option to take a video of what is happening on your screen.
There is support for a few select cloud storage services, but OneDrive isn’t one of them. For now, you can save the image or web page as a PDF file or image on your desktop or print it. You can then easily save it in OneNote. Make changes? Awesome Screenshot also works with local images and you can also take a screenshot of the desktop.
Awesome Screenshot is free to use, but you need a subscription to connect to cloud apps such as Slack and Dropbox.back to menu ↑
2. Save the picture in a new note and make notes
Why do you need to move the picture after annotating it in OneNote? Probably because you want to rearrange other text or elements in a container. You can avoid that situation altogether by saving the image in a separate note and linking to it from the original.
Right-click the note with the annotated image and select Copy link to page. Select the text you want to link and press Ctrl + K (Command + K on Mac) to paste the link.
You no longer have to move and mess the image around up the annotations. While that’s not the ideal solution and other note taking apps like Evernote handle it much better, it can still work. Especially if you have a setup with two monitors.

3. Save image in the same note and annotate
It only takes a second to click the link to this new note with the annotated image in OneNote. But visual and creative people will not appreciate it. They want to view the image and the rest of the research material on the same screen, and preferably at the same time.
You can insert the picture in the same note, but in a position or location where you don’t need to move it later; preferably in a corner or under or above the note. That requires some planning. You can then link to the container where the image is located. That’s one of the many things I love about OneNote. You can type or insert stuff anywhere you want, instantly creating a container that you can then move or link to from the same or another note.
I’ve inserted the image on the left with relevant text on the right. I can now annotate and link the image. Right-click the container containing the annotated image and select the Copy link to paragraph option.back to menu ↑
4. Move the annotated image later in OneNote
Let’s say you’ve annotated an image and it’s safely stored in a note in OneNote. For some reason, you have to move that image, but you can’t unless the annotations were added before adding the image to notice. As we showed you in point 1 above. If annotations were added using OneNote tools, it wouldn’t move with the image.
One way to fix this problem is to take a screenshot of the image with annotations on it and save it to the desktop. You can do this with the Awesome Screenshot extension or any other app. Delete the old image and add the new one wherever you want after making the changes.back to menu ↑
One problem, OneNote
The annotation is the only problem I have with OneNote. Everything else works fine. I would recommend using Awesome Screenshot or any other image annotation tool. Do not delete the original image after adding it to OneNote. Save it in a folder called OneNote Annotations. That way, in case you need to make further changes to the image, you can do it in the original image and replace it in OneNote instead of using the OneNote annotation tool.
Microsoft Edge used to offer a built-in annotation tool in their browser, but not anymore. I hope Microsoft will add it to their new Edge Chromium browser. OneNote also offers its own Web Clipper browser extension, but you can only highlight text with it. No way to mark up or annotate images.
For now, you have the options above to annotate images in OneNote.
The next up: If you’re not happy with OneNote or tend to work with images and annotations, try Evernote. Here’s an in-depth comparison between OneNote and Evernote.back to menu ↑
