3. Proxy files in the registry

Sometimes you can trace the error “The proxy server is refusing connection” to leftover proxy files in the Windows registry. To edit the registry, press the Windows key and type regedit before hitting enter. This should open the file explorer.

You need to navigate to the next folder. Check out the folder path:

If you see files with the word proxy in their name, delete them. I would recommend that you back up firstup in case things go wrong. You do not need to reboot the system for this step and you can restart Firefox.

4. Reset network settings

This one is worth a try, even if it’s not really a Firefox-specific solution. If the site you are trying to load does not work in another browser such as Chrome and Safari, you should try to reset the network settings.

If the site loads fine in Chrome but not Firefox or Quantum, you can skip this step.

To reset network settings, open Run Command Prompt and run the following commands one by one.

netsh int reset allnetsh int ip resetnetsh winsock resetnetsh winhttp reset proxy

These commands will reset your network proxy settings to their defaults.

5. Recover a hijacked router

Consider yourself lucky if Firefox works fine after following the steps above until you restart your computer. If so, there is a possibility that unwanted malware or software is misbehaving. It force changes the settings on reboot.
