Guide: Fix ‘WhatsApp Picture-In-Picture Not Working’ Issue
Not long ago, Samsung premiered multitasking for phones with its multi-window mode. Google’s introduction of a native split-screen mode on Android 7.0 Nougat acted as a springboard for the Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode on Android 8.0 Oreo.
Now many popular apps such as YouTube, Facebook, Netflix, WhatsApp and more support picture-in-picture mode.
WhatsApp on Android was late for the game, though, as the iPhone didn’t get picture-in-picture support until the first quarter of last year. In spite of the featureIt’s delayed arrival, chances are it won’t run smoothly for various Android devices phone users.
If you also struggle to get it on your phone, we will help you with proven solutions.
Let’s start.
back to menu ↑Check WhatsApp compatibility
WhatsApp’s picture-in-picture mode works for everyone phones with Android 4.4 KitKat and above. Anything less will not support this mode. You can check your Android version by going to phone Settings> System> About> Android version.
back to menu ↑Time to update the app
Now that you have verified app compatibility, you should also check the app version. Previously, picture-in-picture mode was limited to the beta version. However, that changed in January when picture-in-picture also appeared on the stable version. Now all WhatsApp versions above 2.18.380 support picture-in-picture mode. If you haven’t updated your app yet, now is a great time to do so. To do this, go to the Play Store and update WhatsApp.
Supported Videos
WhatsApp does not support PiP mode for videos taken on WhatsApp or sent from the gallery. It only works for external links such as YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
back to menu ↑Wait for video preview
For example, if you’re trying to send a third party link from YouTube and the picture-in-picture mode doesn’t work, then you must have missed a very important step.
Whenever you hit the share link and it opens in WhatsApp, you have to wait a second or two for the preview window to load. Only if the external video has a preview window will it be played in picture-in-picture mode for both parties.
If you received a video link without preview, the video will not play in PiP mode. There isn’t much you can do about it except ask the person to resend it with a preview if you want to watch it while chatting.
back to menu ↑Clear the app cache
Still no sign of picture-in-picture mode? Ah! Then it would be a smart move to clear the WhatsApp app cache right away. Doing so won’t delete your chats, media files, or settings, just temporary files. Note that clicking on storage / clear data will delete everything. So be careful when pressing the buttons in the steps below.
Step 1: Open the device settings and go to Apps & notifications / App Manager / Installed apps, depending on the option available on your device.
Step 2: Tap WhatsApp under All apps.
Step 3: Tap Storage followed by Clear cache. Restart your device.
Use Picture-in-Picture correctly
As they say, “If it’s too good to be true, it isn’t true.” Something similar is going on with WhatsApp. The picture-in-picture mode only works in the chat window with the video link. If you go back to WhatsApp home screen or exit WhatsApp, the floating video window will also disappear. So if you try to use the PiP mode outside of WhatsApp, we unfortunately have to say that it is not possible on Android phone not yet.
back to menu ↑Beta users, be careful
The beta version of WhatsApp or any other app is prone to bugs. Although the feature was initially only available in beta, but may not work as you would expect. So if the feature doesn’t work for you, please switch to the stable version.
back to menu ↑How to Use the WhatsApp Picture-In-Picture mode
Tap the video preview in WhatsApp. The video will then play in a floating window that you can move around the screen by dragging it. You can also change the size by pinching in and out. To watch the video in full screen, tap the full screen icon in the top right corner. You can also control the video with the progress slider which is only available in full screen.
To exit picture-in-picture mode, press the back button or use the cross button on the video to close it.
Turn off Picture-In-Picture mode
Did the PiP mode not meet your expectations or does the floating window bother you? Don’t worry because you can usually play videos without the picture-in-picture mode on WhatsApp.
Unfortunately, there is no direct way to disable the mode. However, we know of two workarounds that do the job perfectly.
back to menu ↑Method 1: Click Link
When you receive or send a video that you want to play in the respective app / website, tap the link itself instead of tapping the video. That will open the video outside of WhatsApp, similar to any other link.
Method 2: Send without preview
As mentioned before, the video preview is essential for the picture-in-picture mode. When sending videos, share the video immediately before the preview appears or tap the cross button in the top right corner of the message to delete the preview.
WhatsApp picture-in-picture mode differs from other apps
Yes. A lot of. For starters, it works on all Android devices from Android 4.4 KitKat. This is not possible with other apps that usually require Android 8.0 Oreo and higher.
Second, it won’t work outside of WhatsApp or even in any other chat as mentioned earlier. That is limiting, as one cannot properly enjoy the PiP mode in its full glory. However, it does work for video calls outside of WhatsApp where you are on it Home button
back to menu ↑WhatsApp can do better
WhatsApp still has a lot to do for picture-in-picture mode on Android. We hope they remove the above restrictions and that the videos also work outside of WhatsApp or at least in the different chats. You would also want picture-in-picture to work for native WhatsApp videos, the functionality strangely available in WhatsApp web, which recently added support for external links as well.
In the meantime, we hope you were able to watch videos in picture-in-picture mode using the above solutions. Do you have anything to contribute to the mail? Let us know in the comments below.
