Guide: Fix ‘Windows 10 Update Stuck on Checking for Updates’ Issue

A few days ago I noticed my laptopThe fan was running at full speed when plugged in. Normally you would think that the problem lies with the fan itself. But when I dug deep into the problem, it surfaced that Windows was unable to update automatically. Every time it tried it got stuck.

Basically, even if you tried to check for updates manually, it would get stuck on the ‘Checking for updates’ screen. Further observation found that the svchost.exe process under Task Manager took up a lot of memory resulting in the fan issue.

You may have noticed the same problem with Windows Update in a different way. It is important to fix the problem as it also interferes with other programs.

In this post, you will find solutions to fix the ‘checking for updates’ issue in Windows 10. Let’s get started right away.

2. Check Date and Time

Then make sure that the data and time are correctly set on your PC. Sometimes the wrong time also messes with the updates.

To verify this, right-click on the clock on your taskbar and select Adjust date / time from the menu.

3. Try a different network

Sometimes the problem is with your network. If you can access another Wi-Fi connection, try connecting your PC to it. You can also use hotspot from your phone to connect your PC.

Once connected to a new network, restart your PC. Hopefully you should be able to download the updates now.

4. Update or disable Antivirus

Often times, the antivirus prevents Windows from updating. To fix the problem, turn it off for a while or check if there is an update available for the antivirus. To do that, open your antivirus program and you will be prompted to update it. After updating, restart your PC and then try to download updates. If no update is available, temporarily disable it and then try downloading the Windows updates.
