Guide: Fix ‘YouTube Button Controls Not Disappearing’ Issue
Usually when you play a video on YouTube it will turn on the screen buttons disappear instantly or with just one tap. Recently I noticed that the buttons like pause and video progress did not go away automatically even after tapping.
There was also a new X character icon in the bottom right corner. I had to press it button each time to hide the controls. It made watching videos on YouTube a bit tedious.
If you are also facing this problem then I will help you get rid of it. You don’t have to press the X mark to hide the screen controls.
Disable Menu Access and Switch Accessibility
I recently read that Android 9.0 Pie has a cool accessibility menu. So I turned on the setting on my Google Pixel 2 XL and discovered a new one button in the bottom panel that provides quick access to notifications, Google Assistant, recent apps and more. Little did I know it enabled YouTube controls too. I had to turn it off for YouTube to work normally.
Here are the steps to disable it.
Step 1: Open the device settings and tap Accessibility. If you can’t find it, look under System Settings or Additional Settings. You can also use the search feature to find the accessibility settings.
Step 2: In the accessibility settings, tap Switch access. Then turn it off on the next screen.
Step 3: If you are using Android 9.0 Pie, tap Accessibility menu and turn it off as well.
Step 4: Restart your device and open YouTube.back to menu ↑
Also try clearing the cache for the YouTube app. Here is how to do it.
Step 1: Open the device settings and go to Apps / Application Manager / Apps & notifications.
Step 2: Here under All apps, tap YouTube.
Step 3: Tap Storage followed by Clear cache.
Clearing the cache does not log you out of the device and does not delete downloaded video. It only erases temporary files and is different from erasing data.back to menu ↑
Update the app
Often times you need to update the app to fix any bugs in the older versions. Go to Play Store and search for YouTube and YouTube VR. Update both apps. Then restart your device.back to menu ↑
Switch to the website
If the problem persists then watch your YouTube videos through their website on one mobile browser. You can also try the YouTube Go app, the smaller version of the app designed for devices with less memory and regions with a poor internet connection.back to menu ↑
Bonus Tip: Hide the system navigation bar in full screen mode
A video is only completely enjoyable when viewed in full screen. Sometimes YouTube faces another issue where the navigation bar does not hide in full screen mode, disturbing the atmosphere. Here are the solutions to hide it.back to menu ↑
Switch to another app
When you see the navigation bar in the YouTube app, switch to another app using the recent apps button. Once you are in the new app, go back to the YouTube app. The bottom bar will not be there.
Tip If you are an Android 9.0 Pie user, you can use the summary selection feature to copy text and images directly from the recent apps screen.

Enable / disable VR mode
The YouTube app makes any full-screen video friendly with the virtual reality (VR) mode. The option is present under the video settings. To hide the navigation bar, you must first turn on VR mode and then turn it off.
Doing so will force the video to go to full screen mode without the navigation bar. So toggling this mode on and off should solve your problem.
To do this, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the YouTube video in full screen. Then tap the three dots icon in the top right corner and select Watch in VR.
Step 2: Once in VR mode, tap the cross X icon to exit VR mode. You will be taken to normal mode. Now watch a video and you won’t see the navigation bar.

Turn off Picture-in-Picture mode
Sometimes Picture-in-Picture mode (PiP) can be responsible for the problem due to a bug in the app. It is useful to disable this mode. Here is how to do it.
Step 1: Launch the device settings and go to Apps / Application Manager.
Step 2: Tap YouTube under All apps.
Step 3: Scroll down and tap Picture-in-picture. Shut it down.
It’s not the best solution if you like PiP mode but it can be one of the options to fix the problem.back to menu ↑
Easy to operate
Like all apps, even YouTube runs into a problem from time to time. We hope the above solutions help to fix the problem. Once YouTube is up and running well, you can loop and sort your videos in many ways. And if you want to download YouTube videos, you can do that quite legally.
However, it is easy to lose track of time on YouTube. Interestingly enough, you can set a time limit for that to watch over your viewing time.back to menu ↑
