Guide: Get Quick Word Meanings in Chrome, Opera and Firefox: Guide

There are times when I have to open a new tab in my browser while reading an article just to look up the meaning of a word I’m not sure about. The Google search inline frame that appears up the meaning on the search page may have made some of the work easier for us, but we still need to open a whole new tab. Not only does it take some extra time, but it also spoils the enjoyment of reading the article.

Being a Chrome user, I started looking for ways to make a popupup dictionary for any word directly on the page where I read the article. Since not everyone uses Chrome, I expanded my research to Firefox and Opera as well. So let’s see how to get a little pop-up dictionary in all popular browsers.

Compared to the above two extensions, the Bubble Dictionary for Opera is a bit overwhelming. The extension not only shows the meaning of the specific word, but also shows search results from various search portals such as IMDB, YouTube and Google.

Opera

After installing the extension, all you have to do is highlight a word to launch the Bubble Dictionary add-on. All related information about the word will be in a pop-up box and as soon as it loses focus it will become translucent. Esc key can be used to pop up thisup framework. A trigger key can be added via the extension option in the right-click context menu.

Opera options

If you don’t want that much information about a word, you can configure the extension to ignore the rest of the portals when searching. The extension can also be used as a translation tool.
