Guide: Google Tasks vs Any.do: Comparison and Review

I’m on a mission to thoroughly compare Google Tasks to other good-to-do apps out there. I’m a to-do app buff, if you will. I recently compared Microsoft To-Do with Google Tasks and discovered a lot of interesting details in the process.

In this post, we decided to compare Google Tasks with the very popular tasks app.

Will Google Tasks be able to compete with Should you switch to Google Tasks? Let’s continue the comparison.

App size

Google Tasks seems like a baby to when it comes to app size. On both iOS and Android, Google Tasks has a very small footprint. It weighs 4-5 MB on Android and 34-35 MB on iOS. On the other hand, weighs in at 25MB on Android and 145MB on iOS.

Google Tasks has been part of Gmail for centuries. But now it is available as a separate standalone app for both Android and iOS. There is currently no Windows or Mac app, but you can access it from the legacy web version.

You can also easily access it from the revamped Gmail website. It is present on the right in the new taskbar. There is also a Chrome extension, but similar to the website, the extension looks meh. But they both work fine.

On the other hand, is also available as Android and iPhone app. There is no Windows app, but they have a Mac app. They also have a Chrome extension and a web version.

User environment

Both apps have a similar white interface. When you open the Google Tasks app, you will be taken to the My Tasks screen. I like how Google Tasks renders the items without throwing Today and Tomorrow in your face, as is the case with

Unless you manually add a date to a newly created task, it will be listed under Today in The home screen also shows tasks under Today, Tomorrow, Upcoming and Someday.

Furthermore, the home screen has three tabs at the bottom – Tasks, Calendar, Settings and some options at the top. Google Tasks uses the upcoming Material Design 2. It has moved the navigation icon and settings menu down.

There is also a huge difference in the format of multiple lists. While there are multiple lists in the navigation drawer in Google Tasks, they get a separate screen in

When it comes to subtasks, Google Tasks gives them as important as the normal tasks. You can add notes to it and complete them with a tap. They are also visible on the main screen. However, in, subtasks are not visible on the main screen, nor can you add notes to them. Overall, I like the way the Google Tasks app handles the subtasks.

Suggestions and auto-completion

When creating a task, proposes different tasks. For example, you have calling, emailing, cleaning, sending, paying, etc. Once you tap on a task, it automatically tries to perform tasks using various smart searches. For example, if you tap Call, you will get suggested contacts.

Google Tasks is simple. It offers no such thing. You will be given a blank template to enter your tasks. While autocomplete and suggestions are ok in, I personally don’t like them.

What I like about is that pressing the Enter key creates a task, which is not possible in Google Tasks. You have to tap on Save button to create tasks.

Tasks completed

Strangely (or not) doesn’t have the familiar circular icon next to each task to complete it. You have to swipe from left to right to complete it. Swipe from right to left to move it back. Fortunately, Google Tasks supports both. You can swipe the task or tap the round icon to complete a task.

Reminders are an important part of any to-do app. While you can create time and date-based reminders with the app, Google Tasks is currently limited to dates. You can’t assign specific time to reminders in Google Tasks.

Others Features

Any.Do comes with even more features such as missed call reminders, task sharing and built-in calendar. none of these features are present in the Google Tasks app. also supports tags, location-based reminders, recurring tasks and themes. However, those are only available in the premium version.

Worth the change?

I was looking for a simple to-do list app and task manager that could help me write things down without the pressure of putting a date on it. Google Tasks does a pretty good job of that. It creates multiple lists and organizes them neatly.

When it comes to, it’s too big a task app for me. I don’t like the user interface either. But that’s just my perspective. If you’re a regular user, there is no point in switching to Google Tasks unless you want a simpler app. If you are new to the world of to-do apps, Google Tasks is great. And if you want something extra features, is a better choice.
