Guide: How to Add/Remove Black Icon Background in Windows 10 PC

Apparently there is one bug in Windows 10 adding black background to foldersIt does not affect the data in it in any way; it just makes the folder look, well … ugly. It can happen because of corrupted files, a problem with the folder thumbnail cache or with the Windows image

I also faced this problem and after fiddling with multiple solutions, I managed to fix it for good. If you are dealing with the same problem, then I can help you fix it with the same methods I tried. Let’s see which solution works for you.

Solution 1: Restore the default icon

Just this solution temporarily solved my problem, because it went black again after rebooting. However, many users have reported that this solution has permanently fixed the problem for them. And it is easier to implement. Let’s try this first.

Right-click on the appropriate folder and select Properties from the context menu. In the properties go to it To adjust tab and click on it Change icon button

Here, randomly select an icon you want and click OK to select it. Then click on OK again to apply the changes.

select a new icon

Now go back to the same Change icon option, and this time click the Restore default settings button instead. When you click OK, the default icon will be restored and most likely the black background issue is resolved also.

Solution 2: Clear the Read-only attribute check box

There is a chance that the Read only The folder’s attribute can cause the folder to show an icon with a black background. Just remove the read-only attribute and see if it fixes the problem.

Right-click on the folder and select properties from it. Uncheck the box next to this Read only in the Attributes section. When you click OK, the folder icon may have been restored.

Solution 3: Delete the thumbnail cache

Damaged thumbnail cache seems to be the most common reason for this problem. Deleting and resetting the thumbnail cache resolved this issue for many users including me. There are many ways to delete thumbnail cache, but I like using the Windows Disk Cleanup Tool to be the easiest.

Press Window + R keys and type cleanmgr.exe in the run dialog box. When you will hit OK the Disk cleanup tool opens upThe system drive (drive C) is already selected in it, just click on it OK button on it to start scanning.

clean up to drive

After scanning, it will show a list of data that can be deleted to save space. Here scroll down and check the box next Miniatures, and then click OKA prompt is displayed up, confirm it to delete all thumbnail cache. Subsequently, restart the pc and see if the black background is gone or not.

Solution 4: Run the System File Checker

If the problem persists then it could be due to a damaged or missing system fileWindows’ built-in System File Checker (SFC) can search for corrupt or missing system files and automatically repair them (if possible).

To run the SFC scan, right click on the start menu icon and select Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.

command prompt

This will open a command prompt window where needed enter the command sfc / scannowAs soon as you press Enter, the scan will start. It may take a few minutes for the scan to complete, so hold on. When it is done, it will show if there were any corrupt files and if they were repaired or not.

run sfc scan

Solution 5: run DISM scan

One problem with Windows images can also make folder background black. You can run DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) scan to see if there is a problem and solve it

To run the scan, you need to run a command from an elevated Command Prompt window. Follow the process mentioned in solution # 4 to open an elevated Command Prompt window.

In the command prompt Enter the command DISM.exe / Online / Cleanup-image / ScanhealthThis will scan for any problems and let you know if it finds one.

DISM scan

If the above scan reports a problem, you can use another command to fix it. After scanning Enter the command DISM.exe / Online / Cleanup-image / Restorehealth and hit enter. The scan will run and try to troubleshoot Windows images and their components.

dism restore health

Both scans can take a while (10-15 min). Once done, reboot your PC and see if the problem is resolved.

Keep Windows up-to-date

The above solution should fix the problem permanently, or at least for the time being. Since this problem appears to be a bug, there is a chance that one of the Microsoft updates will fix this problem for good. As far as I know, there has been no update that has resolved this issue (at the time of writing). Although a future update may fix the problem, so keep your operating system updated

Ending thoughts

Resetting the thumbnail cache usually fixes the black folder icon background problemAlthough I will recommend that you try to restore the default icon first as it is easier to do and you don’t have to go through the thumbnail regeneration process if this fixes the problem. And of course, you can run SFC and DISM scan to fix corrupted files
