How to Block/Unblock Website from Google Search – Guide

Want to exclude annoying or spammy websites from Google search results? You can use Google’s Personal Blocklist plugin to help you.

How to Block/unblock site from Google search

Block websites at the browser level

Google offers an easy-to-use Chrome add-on called Personal Blocklist that lets you block entire web domains from being displayed. up in Google search results. If you find any irrelevant site on search results pages, just click on the block link (screenshot below) and all pages on that site will be hidden from Google results forever.

Prevent websites from appearing in Google search results. The Chrome add-on implements client-side filtering – blocked sites are still displayed in Google search results as before and the add-on simply hides them on the screen using CSS. A limitation of this approach is that it only works within Google Chrome. That is, if you are searching Google within Firefox or maybe your mobile phonethe site filters you created in Chrome will not be available to you.

Block websites by Google

Google also offers a web dashboard to manually block spam sites, one URL at a time. You can add up for 500 different sites on your blocked list and Google will not show pages from any of the included sites as long as you are signed in to your Google account. That’s the promise, but unfortunately, this solution doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Google search with a global filter

  • If you want to create a “global filter” for your Google search results that works across all browsers including mobile devices, you can use Google Custom Search (CSE). CSE, if you’re new, is Google, except it’s meant to search a smaller set of sites and not the entire internet. Now here’s a little trick. You can do a reverse configuration so that Google CSE searches the entire internet, except for sites that you deem useless. See how you can configure it up in 2 minutes.
  • Assuming you are blocking websites using the Personal Blocklist add-on in Chrome, click the BlockList icon in the Google Chrome toolbar and choose “Export” to download the list of all the websites you have blocked so far.
  • Click here to create a Custom Search Engine. Give it a name, description and in the “Sites to Search” section, enter all popular TLDs (like *.com, *.org, etc) one per line. Whitelist all popular top-level domains such as .com, .org, etc.
  • Click Next to save your changes. You will have the option to test your CSE. Click Next again and on this screen click on the link that says “Add more sites”. This is where you will enter the list of “bad” sites that should be blocked in Google search results.
  • Choose Exclude Sites -> Bulk Exclude Sites and enter all domains that should be removed from Google search results. You can even copy and paste your Chrome Block List here. Save the changes and your “clean” Google search engine is ready.
  • PS: If you want your Google search engine to search all known TLDs and not just popular ones, go to the Manage Search Engine page within Google CSE and change the “How to search included sites” from “Search included sites only” to “Search the entire web but emphasize included sites”.
  • Filter out the least useful sites from your Google results. Google CSE results are as relevant as Google’s main web search engine and the layout looks good on mobiles and tablets too. The only manual work you’ll have to do going forward is keeping Chrome’s blacklist and CSE’s exclusion list in sync with each other.
