Guide: How to Check Video by Frame in VLC Media Player
When it comes to freeware media players, VLC is the undisputed king. It plays everything: files, discs, webcams, streams, and will even work with that weird codec encoded file you downloaded from a website in Eastern Europe (but please don’t download weird files from websites in Eastern Europe). It works on any platform: Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Unix, iOS and Android. So if you haven’t yet added it to Windows 10 or whatever platform you are using, then click Download VLC on this page. A handy one feature VLC offers are frame by frame, allowing you to play a video step by step. This can be useful if you want to take snapshots of videos, or if you just want to carefully review every frame of that sick skateboarding jump you took on your smartphone.

To play a video frame by frame, you can press a hotkey. First, open a video in VLC by selecting Media> Open file; then play the clip. Now press the E button. The video is paused. Now each additional press of the E button will advance the video one frame. To restart the video, just press the space bar.
E is the default keyboard shortcut for the Frame by Frame option, but you can customize that keyboard shortcut and others. Click Tools> Preferences> Keyboard Shortcuts to open a list of keyboard shortcuts as below. Then scroll to the next frame in that window. Double click on it to open the window below.
Just press the new Next Frame hotkey to configure it. Click on Save button in the Simple Preferences window. Then you can press the new frame-by-frame shortcut.
You can also activate Next frame with a toolbar button. If it is not already on your playback toolbar, click Tools> Customize Interface to open the window below. Scroll through the list of toolbar elements until you find the Frame by frame option. Drag that button anywhere on line 2 so that you can select the option on the playback toolbar.
Now you can move through a video frame by frame with a keyboard shortcut or the toolbar button. Anyway, this option allows you to capture specific snapshots of video with the Snipping Tool or VLC’s Take Snapshot option.
