How to Create Slideshow Using Keynote – Guide

In the dark and distant past of the 1990s, multimedia tools like Macromedia Director (powerful, heavy) and Apple Media Tool (a wonderful and little-known beast) made it possible to create interactive educational, artistic or fun works. They were often distributed on CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, and although these distribution formats have been made obsolete by high-speed networks and flash drives, the Web is not an immediate replacement for outdated interactive multimedia.

The director is, surprisingly, available. Although it’s from Adobe, it’s not part of Creative Cloud and hasn’t been updated in a few years. Unless you have a large project in place at the Director, it is probably best to start over. We will use Keynote, the equivalent of Apple’s PowerPoint. It is capable, modern, compatible with iPad and fast. It is suitable for a variety of projects, from a quick test to a style story choose your own adventure.

  • Step 1: Start by opening Keynote and selecting any of the available templates. Keynote for Mac offers a wide variety of them, so you should definitely take advantage of that.
  • Step 2: Use the first slide as a title page. Depending on the theme of your slide show / storybook, you can choose to add an image or simply some text. Don’t forget, however, that as it is an interactive work, this slide is where readers return to when the story ends, so you can add some extra information there, like a short list of credits, an index or something like that.
  • Step 3: Start by creating new slides and adding the relevant media to each one.
  • Keynote also comes with some really interesting effects, which you can use to make your project even more amazing. For example, Magic Move is one of them. This effect ‘merges’ an image from a current slide with the next one in the transition.

  • Step 4: After completing the main layout, click on the Text icons to add even more text anywhere on the slides, if necessary. After that, right-click on the text and select Add Link.
  • Step 5: Then, under Link to, choose the slide. This is where you can link a slide to another anywhere in your story / slide show.
  • Step 6: Once you finish your slide show / story, you can export it to other formats and still maintain your links. This is a great option if you want to share it with people who don’t have access to the Keynote app. PDF, especially, is a great format for sharing.
  • To export your keynote project, click on the File menu. Then click Export to and select PDF from the menu. There are other formats besides PDF, of course, so choose the one you like best.
