Guide: How to Disable AutoPlay Videos in Firefox Browser
Videos that play automatically are a scourge. And no, I’m not talking about YouTube, Netflix, or any other site you visit to stream videos. It is those sites that you mainly visit with the intention of reading them. Instead, you are bombarded by stupid videos that start playing somewhere on a page.
For the most part, these videos are just pointless. Not only that, but they also have longer page load times and consume tons of bandwidth in the process.
Happy Firefox now features the ability to prevent these annoying videos from playing automatically. Finally, you don’t have to rely on extensions (which may or may not work) to help you with that.
There is one caveat, however. Mozilla’s web browser only blocks audible (unmuted) videos. So muted videos can still cause you grief. But do not worry. I’ll show you a handy solution to block those too.
Note: Before proceeding, make sure you have the latest Firefox update installed. To do that, open the Firefox menu, click Help and then About Firefox. If a new update is available, it should start downloading and installing automatically.back to menu ↑
Disable auto-play of videos
Mozilla has added the ability to block videos from playing automatically (and not muted) in the Firefox browser version 66.0 update. However, you still need to manually enable the functionality before the browser can actually prevent videos from playing automatically. The following steps will show you how to do exactly that.
Step 1: Open the Firefox menu and click Options.
Step 2: Click the Privacy and Security side tab. Next, scroll down to the section labeled Permissions, then check the box next to Block sites from automatically playing sound.
That is it. load up whatever annoying site it is playing videos with blaring speakers. And you should be happy to hear that those videos no longer play automatically. Instead, you will see them paused. CNN is a perfect example for testing this great functionality in action.
Of course, you can manually play blocked videos whenever you want by clicking the Play icon in a video window. That’s how it should have always been.back to menu ↑
Obviously, you don’t want Firefox to automatically play videos on sites that mainly exist to stream video. It breaks the experience. For example, I found that Firefox blocked YouTube videos from autoplay when I wanted to open them in a new tab, which isn’t cool and strange.
I checked if I could override this limitation and found that I could do that quite easily.
Whenever Firefox blocks a video from playing automatically, you should see a small icon indicating this in the left corner of the URL bar. Click It. On the context menu that appears up, click the drop-down menu next to Auto-play sound, and then select Allow. Firefox no longer blocks videos from the affected site.
You can also choose to go back to where you needed to enable the functionality to block autoplay videos in the first place. Then use the exceptions button next to Block websites to automatically play sound to exclude sites by inserting URLs directly. That’s where you should go to manage your exceptions.back to menu ↑
Turn off muted videos
If you also hate muted videos (I know I do) then you can rely on a simple solution to get Firefox to disable them too with the latest video blocking functionality. Do not worry. You don’t need to install any extensions! All you need to do is change a single Firefox preference, which you can do with the built-in configuration editor.
Step 1: Type about: config in a new tab and hit Enter. Click on the button I accept the risk! button continue. Just so you know, there’s no reason to fear that prompt. Follow my instructions and you’ll be fine.
Step 2: Type media.autoplay.allow-muted in the search bar at the top of the Configuration editor. That should filter the others’ specific Firefox preference.
Step 3: Double-click the filtered preference to change the value from ‘true’ to ‘false’. Close the tab to save your changes.
And that’s it. You have to find all videos whether they are muted or not so that they cannot be played automatically. Of course, you can prevent videos from being blocked on certain sites, just like you can with non-muted videos.back to menu ↑
What a threat!
Autoplay videos is the worst way to push content to visitors, and I wish publishers understood that. The fact that they’ve resorted to even more videos over the years probably means they don’t care much about their audience. Fingers crossed up to Mozilla for providing native functionality to stop this threat itself.
The next up: Did you know that malicious code packaged in a harmless-looking extension can hijack Firefox to mine cryptocurrency without your knowledge? If you are concerned, here it is how to stop that from happening.back to menu ↑
