Limit people who can message you

Tumblr has a handy option that can significantly reduce the number of messages you receive. Once you turn it on, only people you follow can message you. And honestly, that’s just as good as turning off the feature especially since it’s pretty rare for a followed blog to even make a note of you.

Therefore, followers or random visitors shouldn’t bother you unless you’ve chatted with them before. However, you can always block super annoying Tumblr users when it comes down to it, or use an XKit extension to get rid of the chat feature all the way – you’ll read more about that later.

On the desktop

Step 1: On your Tumblr dashboard, click the account icon, then click Settings from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Turn on the switch next to Messages and wait a moment for the Saved indicator to flash briefly.

XKit Messaging Tweaks Mini extension

If you didn’t know, XKit is a special Tumblr extension with dozens of mini extensions. And with the help of the Messaging Tweaks mini extension, you can hide the message icon and chat window completely from view.

Note: Users should still be able to see you and send messages – it’s just that you can’t see an indication of messages received! Unfortunately, you can only use XKit on a desktop. On mobile, consider disabling message-related push notifications for any interruption of persistent users instead.

Step 1: Download and install XKit for your favorite browser.

Note: If you are using Firefox, click the file named new_xkit-7.8.2.xpi after clicking Download button above to install the extension.

Step 2: Go to your Tumblr dashboard – or reload it – and XKit should integrate itself with your account.

Step 3: Click the XKit icon in the top right corner of your dashboard to up the My Xkit window.

Step 6: Click on Messaging Tweaks in the XKit side pane. Then check the box next to Hide the chat bubble completely.

Done! You should no longer be able to see the message icon or chat window.

However, it is still more than possible to start a chat yourself from the messaging option on someone else’s blog, in which case the instant messaging window will show up short for the duration of the chat.
