How to Enable and Configure Push to Talk in Discord – Guide

With the urge to speak feature on Discord, you can create a button pressing it will activate your microphone and you will be able to communicate. This is especially useful if you live in an area with a lot of background noise, which is basically for all of us. Push to Talk maps a button for one button which you can use to mute your microphone. This is nothing new, most voice and video calling apps have it feature, as well as Discord. This is useful for almost all of us as you can now mute your mic and not allow other Discord users to hear what someone in the neighborhood is saying.

As the name suggests, it’s a Discord feature that turns on the microphone when you press a button that was mapped to this feature. In simpler terms, it’s like speaking into a voice channel with the stipulation that a button must be pressed to activate voice chat. This differs from standard voice chat in that you need to press a button so that your voice is transmitted over the voice channel. If you have a humming background noise, it is not very pleasant for your interlocutors, especially if they are wearing headphones.

How to Enable Push to Talk on Discord

Let’s start by enabling the feature, then follow this up with a second guide in configuring the whole thing. Regardless of which version of Discord you are using, you first need to make sure you are successfully logged in. Once I’ve done that for you, here’s what you need to do:

  • Look for your username in the lower left corner of the screen. Tap the settings icon next to it.
  • Once you are in Discord settings, scroll down and tap on Voice & Video (Voice).
  • Now click on the box next to Push to Talk to enable this feature.

You have now successfully activated Push to Talk. But you can’t use it right away. In order for it to work properly, we need to define a key for Push to Talk feature. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Go to Settings and scroll down to the Keybinds section. Remember that Discord will allow you to set multiple shortcuts for the same feature. This is really useful if you are playing multiple games with different controls. Feel free to add as many as you like.
  • Once you’re there, tap on Add a keyboard shortcut (top right).
  • Now make sure you choose Push to Talk as the action. Once you have this in place, click on Record Keybind and press the key you want to use as a Push to Talk toggle. Click Stop Recording to save your preference.
  • Now go back to Settings > Voice (Voice and Video). Directly below where you activated Push to Talk earlier, you should notice a small slider called Push to Talk Release Delay. This slider modifies the time Discord takes to cut off your voice signal after you release the Push to talk key. The lowest value is 20ms, but I suggest increasing it a little higher so you don’t accidentally interrupt yourself.
