Guide: How to Encrypt/Decrypt Bookmarks Folder on Firefox Browser

It is not uncommon for your data to be compromised on the Internet, which is why we use passwords to encrypt our data and protect it from exploiters. Almost all of us use a password to guarantee the security of our emails, documents, photos and even applications, but have you ever thought about encrypting your bookmarks?

While encrypting bookmarks isn’t always necessary, protecting a password can be a quick fix if you have a shared user account or want to quickly hide a bookmark from prying eyes.

If you think encrypting bookmarks is a good idea, you can try a tool called Link passwordLink Password is a handy add-on for the Firefox browser that allows you to password protect specific or all bookmarks. It works wherever Firefox does. Let’s check it out.

Working with the add-on

Step 1: Download and install Link Password add-on in your Firefox browser. You can search and install it using the built-in Add-on Manager in Firefox or you can just go to the Link Password page and click Download Now button

Step 2: Once you’ve restarted your browser after the plugin is installed, open your bookmarks library to encrypt your links.

Step 3: Once you see the link you want to encrypt, right click on it and select Encrypt this link

Encrypt the link

Tip You can also batch encrypt links by selecting a folder instead of a single link in the step above.

Step 4: You must now enter a password for the encryption of the link (s). You can check in at the time of encryption Rename links giving the title of the page a random name. You can still search for the link if using the favicon.

Password information

Tip I would recommend using a single password to encrypt all links as using a different password for every second link can mess things up up

That’s it, the next time someone tries to open the encrypted link, they will be prompted for a password, without which the link cannot be opened.

Open the Linkk

To decrypt, right-click on an encrypted link in the Firefox bookmarks library and click Decrypt this link.

Note: If you encrypted a link using the plugin, make sure to decrypt it if you plan to remove the add-on for any reason. If you don’t, all your tagged bookmarks won’t open until you reinstall the plugin.

My Verdict

Overall, the addon is great, but what I think there should be an option to add a master password to manage all encrypted links. If someone forgets the password of an encrypted link, there is no way they can recover it and the link will be lost forever.
