Guide: How to Find Code Errors In Sublime Text

Writing code for hours to find out that it produces errors is one of the most troubling things in a developer’s life. This gets worse when we have no idea what we did wrong. And if something goes wrong, the developers go all out (check out Jake’s post for 30 Common Ways We Deal With Code Errors).

However, if you’re writing code with Sublime text, here’s a small one tip to minimize this common problem and avoid giving up code.

Fluff and linters

Ribbon, in programming, is the term that refers to an attempt to analyze possible errors or bugs in the codes. Linter is the tool for Fluff (ing)There are literally a ton of linters for almost all languages, such as JS, PHP, Java and even CSS.

By Fluff formation, not only can you minimize errors and bugs, we can also become a better coder as this is one reason for us to follow standard rules and best practices when writing code. Luckily, there’s a Sublime Text plugin that packs all of these linters into one package, allowing us to seamlessly fluff different codes.

Install SublimeLinter

First, you need to install Package Control for the easiest way to install the Sublime Text plugin. Once you have it installed, hit Shift + Command + P and search for “Install packageThis will load the package repository.

Once loaded, look for SublimeLinter, and press Enter to install.

Adjust when fluffing occurs

By default, the fluffing process runs in the background, the process runs immediately while we write the codes. For an easier experience, I recommend changing this behavior (but if you’re okay with the current setting, skip ahead).

Go to the Preferences> Package Setting> Sublime Linter> Setting – User, which opens in a new tab.

Then add the following line to make sure that linting occurs only when saving a file.

{“Sublimelinter”: “save-only”}

Linting CSS

Now let’s try it out with our codes, starting at C.S.SWe have the following adjacent class selector without the closing curly brace.

.class.anotherclass {border-radius: 5px;

After saving the file I appeared to have received 1 warning and 1 warning.

css errors

The error message can be found in the status bar, to the left of the line number, marked with a warning sign. In my example, it notified me about the missing curly brace, and also advised me to avoid using adjacent class selector, as it has some issues in Internet Explorer 6.

Linting JavaScript

Then let’s try this with JavaScript. This time we have the following JavaScript function from W3School. I introduced errors by removing the semicolons, something most programmers often forget to do.

function myFunction () {var x = “” var time = new date (). getHours (); if (time <= 20) {x = "Good day"} document.getElementById ("demo"). innerHTML = x}

After saving the file, (ta-da) yes, I am missing a few semicolons.

If you code with Sublime Text, I think SublimeLinter is a plugin you need to install. Not only does it help shorten the time it takes you to find errors in your code, it also helps you become a better coder in the long run.
