How To Find Windows PC Motherboard Model – Guide
Checking your computer’s specifications is, for the most part, a simple procedure. In just a few clicks, you can find out which CPU or graphics card you have, as well as how much RAM your system has. It’s a little harder to figure out which motherboard you have. Fortunately, determining the type of motherboard on your computer is still pretty straightforward, and we offer several methods on this page, each with step-by-step instructions.
Method 1: Use a Command Prompt
If you’re comfortable running command prompts, this method is probably your best bet for finding out your motherboard information.
To find out which motherboard you have, follow these steps:
1. In the Windows search bar, type ‘cmd’ and press enter.2. At the command prompt, type wmic baseboard get product, Manufacturer3. Your motherboard manufacturer and motherboard name / model will be displayed
For this method to work correctly, you will need to type in the prompt provided exactly as shown.
Method 2: Open the computer and check the motherboard
Another method you can use to quickly check which motherboard you have is to open up your computer and look for the manufacturer and model number on the motherboard itself.
Here is a list of the most common motherboard manufacturers (in no specific order) to help you locate the manufacturer name:
MSIASUS (or ASUSTeK) GigabyteASRockBiostarEVGA
If you found the manufacturer’s logo on the motherboard, but you’re not sure where the motherboard model name is, look for the motherboard chipset. This will be a 4-digit code that starts with a letter and is followed by three numbers.
For example, in my motherboard image above, you can see that I have a motherboard with Z370 chipset (oF is a part of the ASUS model number for this motherboard). If you find a string of similar 4-digit numbers, you’ve probably located your motherboard chipset and its model number.
Method 3: How to Check your motherboard model in Windows with ‘System Information’
In some cases, you can find your motherboard model in Windows by checking the System Information menu. Here it is how to do it:
1. In the Windows search bar, enter ‘System Information’2. Scroll down the System Summary tab (opens on the left side of the window) until you find ‘Motherboard Manufacturer’ or ‘Motherboard Manufacturer’.3. The information next to ‘Motherboard Manufacturer / BaseBoard’, ‘Motherboard Model / BaseBoard’ and ‘Motherboard Name / BaseBoard’ should give you the information you are looking for.
While this method might seem like the easiest way to check which motherboard you have, it can be hit or miss. At the very least, you can at least find out your motherboard manufacturer. However, you may not be able to find the exact model number of your motherboard using this method.
As you can see in the image above, System Information shows who makes my motherboard, but it doesn’t tell me the exact model number.
However, in this figure, the system information displays the motherboard model number. So, although it’s probably not a full test method, checking your motherboard model in Windows will probably work if you have a newer motherboard.
