How to Fix ‘Discord Text To Speech (TTS) Not Working’ Issue – Guide

Discord’s platform is perfect for texting or setting up up video and voice chats between friends, but if you don’t have a microphone (or can’t or don’t want to talk), you can be kicked out. Fortunately, Discord can help you get around this with Text-to-Speech (TTS) feature, which converts text into voice messages. Unfortunately, if Discord TTS isn’t working, you’ll need to find a solution before you can use the TTS functionality on the platform. Most importantly, remember that TTS follows the system default settings for using Discord.

Internet browsers like Chrome or Firefox have a different text-to-speech reading bot than Windows. Depending on which platform you are using, you will hear different TTS voices! If the TTS is not working, it could be the result of a simple communication or software error. Remember, you can fix it in a few seconds.

Also, keep in mind that there may be disabled or alternate non-stereo speaker settings. Outdated operating systems or sound drivers may explain why Discord TTS is not working. It’s also great for people who don’t have a microphone but want to communicate via audio in chat.

Disable and Enable Text to Speech in Discord

Discord TTS not working could be the result of a simple communication or software failure. To rule this out, it’s a good idea to turn TTS off and on again. This will reset all temporary settings and settings stored in the app.

  • Launch your Discord app.
  • Click on the Cog icon located to the right of the User Panel to open User Settings.
  • Now select Text and Images.
  • Now, in the right pane of the window, scroll down to Text to Speech.
  • Now disable the Allow replay and use of /tts command option.
  • Save your changes and exit Discord.
  • Now restart Discord and repeat the steps above to enable TTS in Discord.
  • Once TTS is enabled, verify that TTS on Discord is working fine.
  • Change ‘Never’ option in TTS notifications

If you selected Never for text-to-speech notifications, there will be no TTS bot sound in Discord. Changing this option may solve your problem for the other two options i.e. for all channels or for the current selected channel may solve the problem. More details are provided below:

  • Open User Settings.
  • Now, in the left pane of the window, click on “Notifications”.
  • In the right pane of the window, go to Text-to-Speech Notifications. Three options will be shown: For all channels, for the currently selected channel and never.
  • For all channels: Messages from any channel from any server will be played in TTS regardless of whether the TTS command is used or not.
  • For the currently selected channel: Only messages from the current channel will be played in TTS.
  • Change the option from Never to For All Channels or For Current Selected Channel.
  • Save your changes and exit Discord.
  • Now restart Discord and check if TTS is working fine.
  • Update your system’s Windows to the latest version

Windows is frequently updated to fix bugs and improve performance. Perhaps the bug you are experiencing has already been fixed in the latest version of Windows. Also, there are several cases of Windows version conflicting with the version of Discord installed on your computer. In this case, updating Windows to the latest version may resolve the issue.

  • Close Discord and end your task also in task manager (Windows + R and ‘taskmgr’).
  • Press the Windows key and type Update. Then, in the search results, select Check for updates.
  • Then click on button Check for Updates.
  • If updates are available, install the updates and restart the system.
  • After the system restarts, launch Discord and check if TTS is working fine.
  • Change your system’s speaker configuration to stereo

If you are using a speaker configuration other than stereo, TTS will not be able to work. This is a known bug in the Discord community. Technically there shouldn’t be any difference, but it seems that this option sometimes conflicts with the Discord sound. In this case, changing the speaker setting to stereo may resolve the issue.

  • Close the discord.
  • Press the Windows key and type Control Panel. Then, in the search results, select Control Panel.
  • Then open Hardware and Sound.
  • Now click on Sound.
  • Now select your speakers and click Configure.
  • Now, under Audio Channels, select Stereo and click Next.
  • Now follow the onscreen instructions to complete the stereo audio setup process and then launch Discord to verify that TTS is working fine.
