Chime is an extension for Chrome that supports a number of social networks you want the notifications for. There are of course common suspects such as Twitter and Facebook, but it also supports special networks such as Quora.

2. Connecting services

Log in with one of the supported services as you regularly would. The great thing about Chime is that it doesn’t need access to the actual data, therefore it doesn’t need permissions to get the information from the services. All it does is collect the information in a form that is easy to read.

Then open the Chrome options by right-clicking the icon and selecting Options.

The services shown in bright colors are the services you are logged into. Enable or disable these to include them in the extension. This can be changed at any time while using Chime. You can also simply log out of the service to stop showing the notifications.

3. View notifications

Click the extension icon and select All Notifications to open the dedicated window of each service and its updates.

Each notification is listed here unless you decide to filter the results. An easy way to distinguish between the different services is to look at the colors. For example, every notification under Twitter has one color, while Google Plus has a different color.

Select one of the listed service icons to view only those specific updates. Add or remove them from the main options window.

Aside from all of them being displayed in a dedicated window, most of the reason Chime is so great is because new updates / emails are automatically displayed as a new notification in the Chrome toolbar. Mark items as read or clear all notifications in one go.

When new emails arrive, mark them as read in the notification panel:

If you don’t notice the message at first, because you were away or focused elsewhere, click the Call icon to pull down the notification bar. It really is that easy.

Note that you cannot respond to emails, update Twitter, Facebook or anything like that from Chime. It just functions as a notification hub, and quite a good one too.
