How to Insert Checkbox on Google Sheets

Hello guys in this guide, I am gonna tell you about How to Insert a Checkbox in Google Sheets. So read this article, step by step so you may understand it in a better way.

Google Sheets has been adding some great features lately. Recently, it added a way to easily place a checkbox (tick) in any cell with a single click. Note that I will use the terms “Checkbox” and “Tick Box” interchangeably in this article. While Google Sheets calls this feature a checkbox, it is better known as a checkbox. While inserting the checkbox is super easy (as you’ll see later in this article), it’s impressive how you can use it.

You can easily create dynamic lists and graphs where the user can simply click on the checkbox and you can program your data/graphs to update. I’ll show you some examples of how to do this later in this tutorial.

Guide: How to Insert a Checkbox in Google Sheets

Google Sheets recently released a new one feature – check box. You can insert it into any cell with just a few clicks. But that’s not the best. What impresses us the most is the way you can use it. This feature allows you to create to-do lists or track the progress of your team. In addition, you can also create charts and dynamic lists that can be easily updated. In this article, we’ll show you how to put a checkbox in Google Sheets and share some of our favorites too tricks also.

1. How to Insert a check box on the desktop?

First of all, we will show you how to do this from your laptop or computer. Although Google Sheets uses a phone app, we think it’s better to do some things from a desktop. Simply because you have a better view and there is less chance of errors. So here’s what to do:

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Select the cells where you want to insert checkboxes.
  3. Click on the Insert button.
  4. Select “Checkbox”.

That is it! You can use this method to insert one or more checkboxes – there are no limits. If you want to remove a check box, it’s even easier. All you need to do is select the checkboxes you want to remove and press the Remove button on your keyboard.

Note: If you add a check box to a cell that already contains some numbers or text, they will be removed. Or, to put it better, the check box just replaces them and you lose that content. Therefore, we recommend that you only insert checkboxes in empty cells.

2. Can I insert a check box on Android?

If you are an Android user, today is your lucky day. You do not need to turn on your computer when reading this from your phone. You can insert a check box from your phone just as you would from a desktop device. However, you will need the Google Sheets app to download it.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Open a spreadsheet.
  2. Select the cells where you want to insert checkboxes.
  3. Tap the three dots button in the top menu.
  4. Select “Data Validation”.
  5. Select “Criteria”.
  6. Select “Checkbox”.

There you have it! To remove a check box from the cell, select it and tap Delete.

3. Can I insert a check box on my iPhone?

We have some bad news for all iOS users. Unfortunately, it is currently not possible to insert new checkboxes from the Google Sheets app on your iPhone or iPad. That said, we think Google is in the process of fixing this issue and this option will be available with the next update.

Until then, you can only add a check box from your computer or laptop. However, once you’ve added a new checkbox, you can toggle a cell on and off in your iOS app. This is very important as it means that team members with iOS devices will not be left out and can also participate.

4. Format check box

Did you know you can format your checkbox as you would a regular cell? That’s right. You don’t have to settle for plain checkboxes if you don’t like them. It’s time to get creative and surprise your colleagues. To change the color of a check box, apply the color to the entire cell. The default color is gray, but we’re sure you can find a more striking color in the palette. If you want your check box to be bigger, just select the cell and change the font size. After you format a check box the way you want it, you can copy and paste it just like any other content. There is no need to format each check box individually.

5. Add custom checkbox values

A more advanced option would be to create a check box with a customs value. This is a great option for tracking your team’s progress or creating surveys. In this case, checking the box would mean “Yes”, while leaving it unchecked would mean “No”. Here is how to do it:

  1. Go to the spreadsheet you want to change.
  2. Choose the cells where you want to insert checkboxes.
  3. Click on “Data” in the top menu.
  4. Select “Data Validation”.
  5. Select “Checkbox”.
  6. Click on “Use Custom Cell Value”.
  7. Now write a meaning next to the “Checked” option.
  8. You can also enter a value next to the “Unchecked” option, but it is optional.
  9. Click on “Save”.

You can of course also do this with the checkboxes you added earlier. All you need to do is edit and format them again.

6. Create interactive to-do lists

One of the coolest things about checkboxes is that it allows you to create interactive to-do lists. This means that when you tap the check box, the task will be marked as completed. And we all know how satisfying that feels! Here’s how you can do it:

  1. First, you need to create two columns – one for your tasks and the other for checkboxes.
  2. Write your tasks in the first column and then select all cells with the listed tasks.
  3. Click the Format button.
  4. Select “Conditional Formatting”.
  5. Select the option “Format cells as”.
  6. Select ‘Custom formula is …’
  7. Enter this formula: = $ B2
  8. Click on “Save”.

That is it! For even more fun, you can customize your strikethrough lines. You can change their color and width if you wish.
