Guide: How to Manage App Data Usage on Tumblr for Android and iOS
On mobile, Tumblr is a big data eater, period. Scroll through your GIF-laden dashboard for a few minutes and you’re sure to lose a hefty chunk of cellular bandwidth – not to mention the rapid battery drain you’re experiencing too.
Using Wi-Fi is a viable alternative when it comes to preserving your precious cellular data package, but we Tumblr addicts can’t really see that as an option while on the go, can we? So, can you do something about it?
Apparently Tumblr is more than aware of this. Hence, both the Android and iOS apps include a handy data saver feature, provided you’re brave enough to dive into the Tumblr settings a little bit. So let’s take a look at where to find it and what exactly it does for you once it’s enabled.back to menu ↑
Save your mobile data
Tumblr’s built-in data saver feature isn’t immediately visible, but once you find the thing and turn it on, you won’t automatically find any GIFs or videos playing automatically.
Hence, you save a lot of bandwidth that is otherwise used up by automatically playing media. And beyond that, that should also pave the way for longer battery life, even with prolonged Tumblr sessions.back to menu ↑
Step 1: Tap the account icon on your dashboard, then tap the gear-shaped settings icon.
Step 2: Tap the option labeled General Settings. Then scroll all the way down to the section labeled Upload and Download.
See that switch next to the data saver mode? Just turn it on and you’re good to go!

Step 1: Tap the account icon, then select one of your blogs when prompted – it doesn’t matter which one.
Step 2: Open the Settings menu and tap General Settings.
Step 3: Scroll down and tap the option labeled Media Auto-Play.
Step 4: Tap the option labeled Wi-Fi Only.

Data saver in action
After enabling data saver mode on Android or configuring Media Auto-Play settings on iOS, the Tumblr app should work slightly differently. As mentioned above, you will no longer automatically find GIFs or videos.
However, you should still be able to just tap on playable media items when you come across them to make them work just like before.
And to distinguish and avoid confusion between GIFs and regular images, the former have attached a ‘GIF’ label. Cool right?
Also expect a much faster experience with the Tumblr app than before, which is not surprising given the drastically reduced workload your mobile appliance.back to menu ↑
But what about wifi?
Mobile data is a big deal, but it’s not that all broadband packages are unlimited, right? If you’re about to get serious about surfing home, then pausing auto-playing of both GIFs and videos, even when connected to Wi-Fi, is more than possible.back to menu ↑
On Android, you need to enable an experimental Tumblr Labs setting to get the functionality needed to prevent GIFs and videos from playing automatically. While that sounds scary, the feature is relatively stable and you probably won’t have any problems.
To get started, head over to the General Settings screen and scroll all the way down to the Account section. You should see an option labeled Labs underneath – tap on it.
On the next screen, tap the switch next to Activate Tumblr Labs. Then tap the switch next to Tap to play GIFs.
Once you do that, go back to the dashboard and you will see all GIFs and videos paused.
If you’re having trouble, turn off the Tap to Play GIFs option and turn it back on later.
Note: The Tap to play GIFs option affects both mobile data and Wi-Fi and overrides the Data Saving Mode setting.back to menu ↑
Unlike Android, the iOS app doesn’t let you rely on a Tumblr Labs option. Just go to the Media Auto-Play menu, but tap Never Auto-Play instead.
That was fast, right?
Note: Enabling Never Auto-Play will affect both mobile data and Wi-Fi.back to menu ↑
No more worries …
Fortunately, you can now seriously surf while traveling. Either way, you still need to be careful as images alone can consume significant amounts of data.
And if you want to save bandwidth on Wi-Fi too, or if you just hate distracting GIFs or auto-play videos, now you should know what to do about it too!back to menu ↑
