Guide: How to Manage Netflix Profile using Google Assistant
Google is no longer a search engine company. It’s in the business of AI. Search, content (text, audio and video), mobile OS, smart home devices… all of this comes together to make Google Assistant. Google now even links Assistant to third-party services such as Netflix.
I love Netflix like everyone else. The fact that I can now control my Netflix profile with Google Assistant will only improve the experience. Yes, Google just announced voice matching support for individual Netflix profiles.
This means that you can now use Google Assistant to play content from your Netflix profile instead of the main account. Different Google accounts can be linked to different Netflix profiles. This was not possible before. By default, Google Assistant plays from the main / primary account.
I can now continue my replay of Breaking Bad without worrying about my brother fixated on Narcos!
Cool Trick Fan of Chris Pratt? Do you want people to call you Starlord? Launch Google Assistant and say or type ‘call me Starlord’ and confirm. Google Assistant now calls you Starlord every time you open it.back to menu ↑
How to Control Netflix with Google Assistant in 5 steps
Instead of Google Home device, I will be using my Android. However, the process remains the same. You must be signed in to Netflix on your Android phone before starting the installation process.
Note: Google has clarified this feature also works with Chromecast.
Tap and hold the home button bring up Google Assistant. Click here on the blue box in the shape of a container to start exploration mode. This is where Google Assistant will share its new one tricks, and tell you what to do with it.
Click on the 3 vertical dots at the top right of your screen and go to Settings.
Once inside Settings, you should be able to see your profile with a ton of options. You can control the behavior of your Assistant here. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the screen and you will find the Videos and Photos option. Click here.
Under the Videos heading you will see one option: Netflix. You are currently not logged in. Click on the blue link button to start the process.
Log into your Netflix account when the page loads in your default browser. You should now see a list of your Netflix profiles. Select the one you want to connect with this particular device and Google account.
You will be asked to confirm your selection. Click on Confirm.
You will now be returned to the Video & Photo Settings screen where you will see that your Netflix account is linked. If you ever feel the need to change profiles, such as when you change devices or Google account, you can click on the Manage Profile option here and change or unlink the profile.
Now let’s see how this works out and what instructions can we expect the big G to follow. I asked Assistant to run Breaking Bad on Netflix but it didn’t work. You see, it understands the word ‘play’.
So I asked again, politely this time, to play breaking bad on Netflix. I got a response and Netflix started Season 1 Episode 1 of the series.
Google Assistant’s job is to open the app and launch the said movie or TV show when you say so. Netflix will then take over and resume playback from where you left off last time.
Fun fact: This is for Harry Potter fans, which means pretty much the whole world. Google Assistant is smart enough to understand grade 1 spells. You can use Lumos to turn on your flashlight in the dark when you are scared, and Nox to extinguish your droid. You can also use Silencio to enable silent mode.
Note that Google Assistant will only work if the show or movie you want to watch must be available on Netflix in your country. Otherwise a blank will be drawn. OK Google, when do you support Hulu and Amazon Prime?back to menu ↑
