How to Restart a Chromebook – Guide

It’s rare that you need to restart your Chromebook, and most of the time it’s for an OS update, but if you want to restart or restart your Chromebook for whatever reason, we’ll look at the different options you have. Shutting down and restarting

  • Click on the notification section located on the right side of the browser tab at the bottom of the screen. Typically, it indicates the battery, Wi-Fi, and time of your Chromebook.
  • You should be able to see a small open window up in the lower right corner of the screen. Go ahead and select the ‘Shut down’ icon at the top of the notification window. This should automatically save any data and work you’ve opened on your Chromebook and securely log it out of your Google account before turning off your device.
  • If you’re still worried about not getting disconnected, you can always opt out right before you opt out of your laptop. To do this, simply select the ‘Sign out’ option to the left of the ‘Shut down’ button button.
  • You can now power your Chromebook back up using the power button.

  • Find and hold power button for approximately three seconds. This should automatically log you out of your Google account, save your work, and shut down your Chromebook.
  • You can also hold the button for just a second or so, which should reveal a ‘Power Menu’ where you’ll have the option to ‘Shut down’, ‘Log off’, ‘Lock your Chromebook’ or ‘Give feedback’.
  • Now you can restart by pressing the power button button as always.

    This method risks losing any unsaved work, so be sure to manually log out of your Google account before starting. You can do this by holding down Ctrl and Shift + pressing Q twice or via the notification section located on the right side of the navigation bar. After clicking on it, go ahead and select the ‘Exit’ option located in the top left corner of the notification window. Prepare? Okay, let’s do a hard reset on your Chromebook.

  • Hold ‘refresh’ key and tap on power button soon after. This should force your Chromebook to automatically restart.
