In Windows 8 / 8.1, Microsoft did not provide enough control over modern apps. You cannot move your modern apps from one partition to another. But now in Windows 10 you can. You can even install and run modern Windows 10 apps from an external drive. Well, doing this can save you some precious storage space if you’re short on it. So let’s see how you can do it.

Install and run Windows 10 modern apps from an external drive
Here in this guide, I have used a flash drive as my external drive. You can use a portable hard drive or even a DVD if you prefer. Well, start by going to the settings. Press Windows Key + I to quickly open Windows 10 Settings. In the settings menu, click System Settings.
Then in System Settings, select Storage. You can also search directly for Storage from the search option in the top right corner. Microsoft has done an excellent job organizing the settings
Then, in the storage settings, scroll down to Save locations. Here you will be given the option to set where you want to save / install the modern apps. In addition, you can also change the storage location for your photos and videos.
Under New apps is stored in:, drop-down menu. Don’t forget to insert your external drive before getting to this part. Here you will be given the option to select your external drive as the installation location for modern apps.
Select the external drive that is detected. After selecting you will receive an Apply buttonClick on it to apply the settings.
Now when you install an app, it will be installed on that particular external drive.
Note: The external drive must be connected to run the installed apps. If you open the app without the external drive connected, you will get the following error.
Once you insert your external drive, the app will open.

Move already installed apps to external drive
Go to Settings> System> Apps and FeaturesHere you can manage your already installed apps and also delete them. But along with the Uninstall button you get the move buttonWhen you select an app, you get options.
Note: You can only move third-party Windows 10 Modern apps. Built-in Microsoft apps or universal apps cannot be moved or changed.
Then click move and you will be given the option to select your external drive.
After you select your drive, it will start moving the app. You should have the following folders on your external drive.
Note: Do not change the folder location or create a root folder for all these folders. You also need read rights to access some folders.back to menu ↑
You can easily manage the apps you just installed on your external drive. In the apps and Features settings, at the top you will get the options to view apps installed on different drives. Select the external drive and it will show you the list of installed apps.
