Guide: How To Send/Receive Bitmessage Email From Web Client

We recently had a guide to use Bitmessage as a Windows or Mac application to send secure, anonymous text to another Bitmessage address. While simple text can be sent with that method, Bitmessage.ch is an online email client that uses the same anonymous address but can be used from any browser to send formatted text. In addition to online use, messages can be sent as regular emails. This means you can use a Bitmessage address to send email to any address, such as Google or Microsoft accounts.

For example, I would create an account on Bitmessage.ch to receive a unique Bitmessage address. This address is used as my e-mail address. So I can log into the webmail and operate it as if it were a popular email service. Add files, make text bold / underlined / italicized and even send read receipts to recipients.

If you like the Bitmessage program, you will love using this online service.

Step 3: Log in to the webmail to create and receive email via this link. You will be asked if you want to open a non-HTML client or one that supports HTML and attachment. Choose the latter because it looks like a regular email client.

Log in with the address from step 2 and the password from step 1.

One thing that is a definite drawback is the length of the email addresses. Shorten a Bitmessage.ch address with an alias by following this link. Before doing this, be aware of the following restrictions:

  • You cannot send bitmessages from the alias to the bitmessage network
  • Your username for the services is still your bitmessage address
  • You need to change the settings in your email client and the web interface to send messages from the alias
  • You cannot change or delete your alias once it has been set
  • The alias must be at least 4 characters long

Now my alias is JonFisher@bitmessage.ch, instead of the much longer address. Use your full address if you plan to add this account to Thunderbird or the Outlook email client.

Conclusion

If you like the feel of a webmail interface, you can use Bitmessage.ch’s interface without any problem. Send and receive formatted text and attachments under your Bitmessage disguise without the tremendous fear of privacy issues associated with using a more popular service like Gmail.
