Guide: How to Set Default Customized Search Engine in Chrome for iOS

Chrome for iOS is arguably the best third-party web browser on the iPhone and iPad. That’s mostly because of the excellent user interface and seamless sync capabilities it brings to the table. But there is one problem: it cannot be set up custom search engines. Or at least it did.

Fortunately, Chrome for iOS lets you add and set up now up any search engine as the default pretty easily. So you are no longer tied to Google, Bing or Yahoo. But how do you do that? Let’s find out.

Note: You must have Chrome version 72 or later installed on your iPhone or iPad to add and set up up new search engines as default. If you cannot follow the instructions below, try updating the browser from the App Store.

Add search engines

Despite the functionality to add new search engines, Chrome for iOS doesn’t provide a direct way to do that. Instead, the browser now detects all the search engines you perform a search with, and then automatically adds them as a ‘recently visited’ search engine. All you need to do next is set one of these as your default search engine.

There is nothing complicated about the whole procedure, and the steps below should help you figure things out immediately.

Step 1: Go to the home page of the search engine you want to add. Now go ahead and perform a search. It can be about anything.

Step 5: Go back and you can immediately start searching using the search engine when you open a new tab.

Note: Unlike when Google is set as the default search engine, Chrome for iOS doesn’t feature the logo of custom search engines on new tabs.

Repeat the procedure when you want to set up any other search engine as default. You can also add site-specific search engines and even set them as default. For example, adding Amazon’s search engine should be insanely useful when you want to do a huge amount of shopping!

Remove search engines

To remove a custom search engine that you have set as the default, first switch to a built-in search engine (Google, Bing, or Yahoo) and wait a certain amount of time for Chrome to remove it automatically. . Alternatively, you can delete your browsing data to make that happen faster.

In the Chrome settings panel, tap Privacy and then tap Clear browsing data. To preserve your passwords and data autocompletion, make sure to clear the Saved passwords and Autofill data options before clearing the browser cache.

Three search engines to switch to

There are dozens of search engines – some good, some bad. If you know which one to add, here are three fantastic search engines to consider.

1. DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo is a privacy-focused search engine, and arguably the best. It never tracks or personalizes your searches, and it is in stark contrast to Google’s absurd data collection practices. The integrated! Bangs Shortcuts are a handy implementation, both for going directly to sites and for searching directly for site-specific content. And coupled with the Chrome address bar, it’s a formidable search engine to have as a default.

2. Qwant

Qwant isn’t quite as advanced as DuckDuckGo, but it’s another search engine that doesn’t collect data related to your browsing habits. It has a catchy search results page with dazzling colors, a built-in dark mode that works well, and a social bookmark feature called ‘Boards’ where you can easily upload photos, videos and text to discuss them with others. And don’t forget to check the built-in Qwant Music search engine – it’s great to use.

3. Ecosia

The Ecosia search engine generates queries based on algorithms and software that run on hardware powered by 100% renewable energy. It also uses the profits from advertisements (displayed among search results) to plant trees. And since it uses the Bing search algorithm, the results it generates are generally pretty good too.

Ecosia is a unique search engine, and you can always keep track of how far you are from planting the next boom using the counter on the search results page!

Kudos, Google!

Google Chrome for iOS is already one feature rich browser with many tricks up his sleeve. With the ability to finally add custom search engines, it’s way ahead of the competition.

While many would continue to use Google Search, these third-party search engines are definitely worth a try.
