Mac OS X comes with the “Migration Assistant” that allows you to migrate your previously customized settings and configurations from your Mac to your new one. It sounds like a good idea, but if you want to avoid taking over outdated files and some of the old issues that come with them, you may want to start over.

In fact, setting up a new mac only requires a few tweaks here and there. To make it easier for you, we have set up a checklist of things to do when setting up up your new Mac

If you’re customizing a new copy of Mac OS X, this post is for you. We have in today’s article, or should we say checklist, some 15 things (plus a mini checklist as a bonus for designers and developers), you may need to do pre-installation and post-installation. We hope you will find it useful.

Pre-installation

Here are some of the information you will need before starting the installation process.

1. Have your Mac-related credentials ready

If this isn’t your first Apple device, chances are you already have an existing iCloud ID and / or App Store ID.

If you want to have your emails, contacts, calendars, Safari bookmarks, iPhoto photo streams properly synced, you need your iCloud ID. To re-download a previously purchased app without paying again, you need your App Store ID.

2. What do you call this new Mac?

During the installation, you will be asked to enter the username and name of the computer. The username should be a no-brainer; but pay a little attention to the latter. Your computer name is displayed up in networks you connect to and if you are a Terminal user. You can have them replaced later for some reason, but it’s better to get it right from the start.

We recommend using the naming convention of: [Firstname]’s [Device]

Here are some examples:

3. Is your internet connection working?

To set up your iCloud correctly up, you need a working internet connection. The installation can be done without an internet connection, but it is best to set everything up up complete from the very beginning.

4. Perform a system update

Apple releases updates from time to time so there is a chance that the newly installed operating system will still need to be updated with the latest fixes. Check for a system update before doing anything else to avoid duplication. Do it once, twice or until no update is needed.

5. Have your mouse and / or keyboard ferrules at hand

If you’re not a fan of the trackpad, this is the step when connecting your mouse.

6. Adjust the trackpad scroll direction

If you work exclusively with the trackpad, you must calibrate it. Standard. when you scroll down, the trackpad page scrolls down. if it doesn’t feel natural during the test run System Preferences> Trackpad> Scroll & Zoom and remove the checkmark from ‘Scroll direction: natural’

7. Set sharing settings

Do you want to share the screen with another Mac? Do you collaborate with colleagues or do you want to share your local files with them? Do you need remote access to this Mac while you are away? Or is it necessary to share other peripherals (scanners, printers, etc.) that this Mac is connected to with other people on a local network?

If you answer ‘Yes’ to any of these questions, you may need to visit System Preferences> Sharing to enable / disable your preferences.

8. Clean up the menu bar

Like any operating system, Mac includes pre-conditioned selections of apps to make things easier to access. if you’re the minimalist type and prefer a clean menu bar, you may want:

• remove the sound icon (System Preferences> Sound> Turn off Show volume in the menu bar)
• remove time machine icon (System Preference> Time Machine> Disable Show Time Machine status in menu bar
• view clock as analog (System preference> Clock> Select analog

9. Personalize your menu bar

10. Enable access for assistive devices

There are some productivity apps, for example TextExpander, that require access to the Mac Support Devices option. If you expect such apps, it is recommended that you enable them. To do this, go to System Preferences> Universal Access> To check Enable access for assistant devices

11. Lock system preferences

To prevent accidental changes to the settings you have made, it is good to lock the settings in the system preferences. No further changes can be made while locking unless you click to initiate an unlock option that requires a password.

12. Remove unwanted icons on your dock

Dock is a convenient way to fire up apps that you use regularly or every day. However, the default installation of the Mac provides you with a range of suggested apps on your document, regardless of whether or not you’ll actually be using them. If you don’t use them, this will become a source of flutter.

You can delete unwanted apps on your dock by holding the icon and dragging them up to delete them.

13. Remove unwanted apps

If for some reason you have a Mac with a lower specification that gives you less storage space, you may want to remove some of the default apps that you won’t be using.

To efficiently remove apps from Mac, we recommend appzapper.

Here are some default apps you may not need (depending on your needs, of course) and can therefore be removed for free up a significant amount of storage space:

• Garage band
• iMovie
• iPhoto

14. Show hard drives on desktop

By default, your Mac keeps your desktop clean. That means that the icons or shortcuts to hard drives, devices or networks you are connected to, as well as the drives you mounted, are hidden or invisible.

If you want to have these icons on your desktop but have no idea how, do the following:

1. Select Finder app
2. Go to Finder> Preferences
3. Check the required items under Show these items on the desktop below the General tab.

15. Adjust the desktop icon, grid, and text size

Whether you want smaller icons on your desktop to fit more, or larger icons to make them stand out, both approaches can be customized through the desktop configuration menu. Right-click on the desktop and select Show View Option.

You can experiment with “Icon Size”, “Grid Spacing” and “Text Size” to adjust them to your preference. Select ‘Snap to Grid’ to have your icons and folders fit nicely into the grid you set with less effort.

Essential for designers / developers

I – Install Java runtime

Java runtime may be required for a number of applications that you will install later, especially the Adobe suite of apps. Click here to install it.
