How to Troubleshoot iPhone’s Wifi Hotspot – Guide
Most of the time, turning your iPhone into a mobile hotspot is an instant and continuous process as you only need to enable this option in the Settings app. However, we’ve all had problems with our phones whether it’s because we refused to connect other devices or because we couldn’t share a Wi-Fi network seamlessly.
If you are having specific issues when trying to connect to a hotspot, here are some of the best ways to fix your WiFi hotspot issues on your iPhone.
Make sure Tethering is enabled
Sounds obvious, but are you sure you’ve enabled tethering in your iPhone’s settings? Even if it was previously enabled, you may have disabled it by accident through the Control Center, or perhaps an iOS update disabled it without your knowledge. If it is not activated, your iPhone’s hotspot cannot be discovered.
To check if your personal hotspot is enabled, go to Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot or just Settings > Personal Hotspot and make sure the toggle is in the On position. You should see a message below that says Now Discoverable, along with the name of your hotspot network.
If tethering settings are not available
For reasons that aren’t always entirely clear, some carriers disable tethering on their devices. The problem is more prevalent on locked devices that you purchased directly from a carrier store, but it can happen on unlocked devices. phones and pills too. This problem manifests itself in several ways. You may find that the tethering option is fully grayed out in the Settings menu, or you may see a message on the screen that says To enable personal hotspot on this account, please contact [carrier]. Often there will also be a spinning wheel next to it.
Sometimes a quick search of your carrier’s FAQ will resolve the issue. The solution can be as simple as sending an SMS to your carrier to enable the setting. Missing APN data could also be the culprit. If you know the codes, you can add them by going to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Cellular Network or Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Options > Mobile Data Network.
Turn your device off and on
It’s always worth following the old advice of turning your device off and on again if your iPhone hotspot isn’t working. For a quicker solution, you can try turning on Airplane Mode. Activate it, wait 10 seconds and deactivate it again. You should also try turning the device that is trying to connect to your iPhone hotspot on and off. Keep in mind that the problem may be with the other device and not your iPhone.
Try a different connection method
Most people assume that in order to use a personal hotspot, you need to use a Wi-Fi connection. This is not true. You can also use Bluetooth or even a reliable USB cable to make the connection. When trying alternative hotspot connection methods, you may discard (or establish!) Wi-Fi phonehardware. To use a different connection method, you will still need to enable your personal hotspot as described above.
If you are trying to use Bluetooth, you will need to pair your iPhone with your computer or mobile device you are trying to share the hotspot with. On an iPhone, that means you need to go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap on the name of the device in question. The process on your other device will be OS specific. Consult the manual or consult our guide when connecting your mobile device to a Bluetooth enabled PC for further guidance. If this is your first time connecting the other device, you may need to go through a PIN verification process.
Using a USB cable to connect to a hotspot is as simple as connecting your phone to a computer and selecting the hotspot from the list of available networks. USB also benefits from being the fastest connection type. If speed is important to you, this is the best solution.
Reset Network Settings
iOS offers a built-in way to erase user data and restore settings to factory defaults. However, you can also take a more granular approach by only removing certain types of data. In case your iPhone’s personal hotspot doesn’t work, you just need to delete the network settings.
To do this, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. You will need to enter your password before phone allows you to proceed. The reset process will remove all your Wi-Fi and carrier settings and delete your custom iPhone name. This will give you a blank slate to ensure there is no wrong network configuration causing the hotspot issue.
Sign out of iCloud
Some people have also claimed that logging out of your iCloud account can solve a personal hotspot not working. It’s unclear why this would solve a network problem, but it’s worth a try if nothing else solves it.
To log out of your iCloud account, go to Settings > [Username] > Exit. Make sure you log back into your account to reactivate your iCloud services.
Reset your iPhone
You can go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings to start the process. But you must be sure to make a backup first.
Alternatively, you can also achieve the same result using Finder or iTunes on a computer. connect your phone to your computer, open the Finder or iTunes app, choose your iPhone from the left pane and click Restore iPhone.
