Guide: How to Turn a Map into Desktop Background
Using a landscape or a cute picture of a kitten as your desktop background is so old-fashioned … and you could just call it boring. Everyone does it. But you don’t have to, because with a cool new web application you can create desktop backgrounds and wallpapers from cards.
Don’t get it wrong here; it is not a screenshot from google maps. After you are done using this tool, you will find that it is styled enough to qualify it with a ‘wow’.
Map -> Image is a free web tool coded by Stamen Design, a San Francisco-based design studio. And that’s the default place you see when you land here. But you can very well fly to other places around the world by entering the name of a city or town (or zip code for US locations) in the location search bar at the top. I love New York, so let’s give it a try.
You can zoom in and out with the + and – buttons. To fine-tune the map, set an image size that ideally matches the resolution of your monitor. You can also do this in the last step, but I prefer to do it first. The maximum resolution is 2000 pixels by 2000 pixels. An automatic detection would have been useful here. But it doesn’t matter, let’s continue setting up up the map the way we want it. Note the yellow frame in the middle; You can position the map exactly how you want by using the frame as a viewfinder.
It’s’ jazzing up’is thanks to the Toner Styles available under the drop-down list. Choose your card style from the available choice. Try them all before choosing one for your desktop. As you experiment with the toners, you can also pan around the map by changing the zoom levels for some interesting views. As you zoom in, the topography reveals more details, such as road networks and area plots, giving the map an interesting symmetry.
For example, I love the cool blue effect I get when using the Terrain-Background toner. Terrain-Lines are also pretty good.
But keep in mind that that not all toners are available worldwide, so some are only available in the US.
Finally, when you click Create, a side panel will appear indicating that your card is being processed. Click on the thumbnail to view it. You can use the permanent URL of the map to share it, or ignore it and download the map directly to your desktop.
Of course you can even print it out and use it in a number of interesting ways … like decorating a flyer or a book cover. There are other maps generated by usage that you can use as well.
Map -> Image is very simple to implement and gives striking results. Experiment with it a bit and tell us if it helped you with jazz up your desktop.back to menu ↑
