How to Turn off In-App Browser for Android Apps – Guide
Unfortunately, it has been taken over by Chrome Custom Tab, which loads some of the features and lets you switch to the browser quickly if necessary. Consequently, the above trick will no longer work for you.
Now tons of apps are bundled with in-app navigation feature, and they all have different methods to disable it. And while it takes a little tweaking in the settings, below are methods for disabling in-app browsers for major Android apps, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and more.
Google App
Google app links open in an in-app browser rather than in Chrome or the default browser. This makes it really annoying, especially when you open an article in Google News Feed. You can follow the steps below to disable it.
- Open Google app on your Android.
- Go to the More section (three parallel points provided in the lower right corner) and click Settings.
- Tap General.
- Scroll down and look for the option that says “Open web pages in app”.
- Move the toggle button to deactivate it.
Facebook being the largest social media platform globally, it needs no introduction. To disable the in-app browser in the Facebook app:
- Open the Facebook app, click on the hamburger menu in the upper right corner of the navigation bar.
- Scroll down and select Settings in the Settings & Privacy section.
- Now, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on Media & Contacts.
- Lightly press the toggle button next to the “Open externally links” option to disable the browser within the app.
Instagram is all about photos and you won’t see links as much as on other platforms like Facebook. However, it opens a browser within the app whenever you tap links in the DM, biography or elsewhere.
Unfortunately, there is no built-in option to disable it. You can still try the workarounds below.
Prevent Instagram from opening links
Whenever you click on an Instagram-related link, it automatically opens in the app. If you want to open it in your browser, follow the steps below:
- Open the settings in your phone.
- Go to Apps & Notifications > View All Apps.
- Select Instagram and click Open by default.
- Here, tap Open supported links and change to Disallow.
Open Instagram links in default browser
When you click on links within Instagram, they open in a browser within the app. To open them in your default browsers like Chrome or Edge, follow the steps below.
- Tap the link inside Instagram.
- Once it opens, click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.
- Click Open In
such as Open in Chrome or Open in Edge.
Gmail
Links embedded in your emails open in a separate custom tab by default. However, you can set them not to open in Gmail via the app’s settings.
- Launch the Gmail app on your phone and click on the hamburger menu to open the sidebar.
- Click Settings and go to the General Settings tab.
- Uncheck the box of the option “Open web links in Gmail” and that’s it.
Telegram
As one of the best alternatives to WhatsApp, Telegram is all about messaging and sharing content, including web links. And since I’ve been using it for a while, no one would understand the pain of tapping ‘Open Link in Chrome’ better than I do. If you feel uncomfortable with it, please follow the steps mentioned below.
- On your Android, open the Telegram app and go to Settings in the sidebar.
- Here, select Chat Settings.
- Scroll down a bit and disable the In-App Browser option.
- Links received on Telegram will now open in your default phone browser.
Twitter is a microblogging platform where sharing links has its own meaning. Follow the steps below to disable browsing in the Twitter app feature on your Android.
- Open Twitter and swipe from the left edge to open the navigation bar.
- Here, select Settings and Privacy.
- Click Display and Sound.
- Uncheck the “Use in-app browser” box under the Web Browser heading.
Any Redditors here? For starters, Reddit is a popular network of communities based on people’s interests. And if you’re among one, I don’t think you’ll need one guide to disable in-app browsing. However, in case you are confused, get up with the steps below.
- Start Reddit on your phone.
- Tap your profile photo in the upper left corner to open the sidebar menu.
- Then click on Settings at the bottom.
- Now, disable the option “Open web links in application” and that’s it.
