How to Turn off Screenshot Preview Thumbnails on Mac – Guide

When you take a screenshot in macOS Mojave or Catalina, a thumbnail preview appears in the lower right corner of the screen for a few seconds. you might want it feature enabled so you can quickly click it to open the Mac’s built-in markup tool (an image editor). However, if, like me, you prefer to open screenshots in your photo editing app, if that’s the case then you won’t have much use for the screenshot preview feature.

How to Disable Screenshot Preview Thumbnails on Mac

  • In Mac OS Finder, go to the /Applications/ folder and then to /Utilities/ and open the application “Screenshot.app”
  • Click the “Options” menu on the screenshot toolbar
  • Uncheck “Show Floating Thumbnail” to disable screenshot preview
  • Exit the Screenshot app when finished
  • With “Show Floating Thumbnail” turned off, screenshot previews will no longer appear and the captured screenshot will be taken and displayed in Finder almost immediately, similar to previous versions of macOS.

For those wondering, Screenshot Mac app replaces Grab app in modern versions of macOS and also has other useful features features which make it easy to change some screen capture options, which used to require the standard terminal and commands. For example, you no longer need to use a standard recording command to change the location of the screenshot file, and you can also set a timer and mouse pointer option for screenshots, just like you would in the Grab app. However, you still need to use a standard recording command to change the file format of screenshots or the filenames of screenshots.

How to Re-enable Screenshot Thumbnail Previews on Mac

  • Open the “Screenshot.app” application from Spotlight or from the Applications/Utilities/ folder
  • Click “Options” menu and check “Show Floating Thumbnail” option to enable screenshot preview
  • Exit Screenshot app
  • When the floating thumbnails option is re-enabled, screenshot previews will appear again and there will be a delay before screenshot files reappear in the Finder and file system.

You may have also noticed similar screenshot previews on iPhone and iPad, but there is currently no method on the iOS/iPadOS side to disable this screenshot preview as this option remains on Mac only. iPad, you can simply swipe or slide the thumbnail to close it, one trick which also works to close the floating screenshot preview on Mac.
