How to Turn On Dolby Atmos on Windows 10 PC – Guide

Dolby Atmos is a new 3D surround sound technology that is marketed as spatial sound. Adopted as the successor to traditional surround sound (5.1 and 7.1), Atmos is much smarter when sending sounds to your speaker system or headphones.

If you installed Creators Update on Windows 10, you will be happy to know that it now supports Dolby Atmos. Windows 10 is a little late to the party as the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were early adopters of this sound technology. While you’ll need to spend a lot of money on Atmos-compatible devices to get the most out of this technology, you can try out some of Dolby’s Atmos object-based spatial sound for free. The coolest aspect of this free option is that you can use it on any PC and with almost any set of headphones.

How to To define up a Dolby Atmos Home Theater on Windows 10

  • Open the Dolby Access app and click the With my home theater box.
  • Then click on Continue button at the first prompt and proceed to connect the HDMI cable of your home theater to your PC.
  • Next, we need to ensure that the Atmos-enabled system is set as the default device. Do this by right-clicking the sound icon (bottom right) and selecting Playback Devices.
  • Make sure the Atmos HDMI playback device is set to default. If not, select it and click the Set as Default button button.
  • After setting the Atmos-powered theater as the default, return to the Dolby Access application and click Configure PC Settings.
  • Then use the drop-down menu under Spatial Sound Format to select Dolby Atmos for home theater and click Apply to confirm.
  • Finally, return to the Dolby Access app. Once spatial sound in Windows 10 is set correctly, Dolby Access should automatically prompt you to calibrate your system.
  • How to To define up a Dolby Atmos for headphones in Windows 10

  • Open the Dolby Access app and click the With my headphones box.
  • Then connect your headphones and select them from the menu on the right of the screen and click on the Continue button button. By clicking continue, the app will “check” for compatibility issues between the headset and Dolby Atmos. But as some have pointed out, this has nothing to do with your headphones – this Atmos feature requires certain sound drivers that Windows 10 has by default. As long as you have Windows 10, all headphones will be compatible, but the sound quality will obviously be different.
  • In the Dolby Access app, click the 30-trial button button. You can also choose to buy it indefinitely.
  • If you choose the 30-day trial, you will be presented with a Microsoft Store window. Click Get to agree to Microsoft’s ToS
  • Upon returning to the Dolby Access window, you will be prompted to download additional content for the application. Click OK and wait for the download to complete.
  • When the download is complete you should see a new Configure PC settings button Appearing. Click on it to open Speaker Properties.
  • Under Speaker Properties on the Spatial Sound tab, use the drop-down menu under Spatial Sound Format to select Dolby Atmos for Headphones. Click Apply to save changes.
