Guide: How to Unblur a Photo or Image
No matter how good your photography skills are, you have taken some blurry photos in your time. Everyone does it – you take a great photo of our kid doing something exciting or the perfect product photo for your eBay listing, and when you go through it later it’s all blurry!
It doesn’t matter if you notice it right away, you can just take another picture. But what if it takes longer to check and there is no way to redo the shot? Sometimes you only have one chance to get that perfect photo. Losing that opportunity can be a bit frustrating.
But is there a way to blur a photo?
Fortunately, the answer is yes. Read on to learn how to blur a photo with various methods and software.
How to Blur a photo or image
To blur a photo or image, you can use a variety of online tools and software, including Photoshop, GIMP, Paint.net, and more.
Let’s see what your options are and how to use them.
Note: Whichever tool you use, the first thing to do is to backup the image file you will be working with! You don’t want to accidentally mess around up the photo and stick with it.back to menu ↑
Photoshop has several tools you can use to blur images. There are three common ways to get a much sharper image from an initially blurred image.
Each does things in a slightly different way and works better or worse in different situations. You just need some trial and error to figure out which is the best option for you.
To correct blur with Photoshop Elements:
- Open your image in Photoshop Elements.
- Select the Filters menu and then Improve.
- Select Unsharp mask.
- Try both Ray and Amount until your image is in focus.
This takes some adjustment to get it right, but it works very well.
To correct blur using only Photoshop:
- Open your image in Photoshop.
- Duplicate the background layer and select it.
- Select Filter, Others, and High pass and put it on 10%.
- Set the blend mode for the layer to hard light and adjust the opacity until the picture is clear.
If you’re using a newer version of Photoshop, you can too camera shake reduction to reduce blur in images:
- Open your image in Photoshop.
- Select Filter, Sharpen, and Shake Reduction.
- Let Photoshop work its magic and see the differences.
This final option lets Photoshop do all the work. No user input regarding settings and levels is required. As long as you have preview enabled, you should see the image before and after side by side.back to menu ↑
GIMP image editor
If you don’t have Photoshop or don’t want to pay for a program, you can use the free image editor GIMP. It’s an excellent program that can do a lot. There’s a bit of a learning curve (like with Photoshop), but GIMP is such a powerful image editor it’s worth learning.
Here is how to blur an image with GIMP:
- Open the image in GIMP.
- Select Blur / sharpen of the Tool box.
- Select Sharpen and drag your mouse over the image to sharpen everything, or select an area to sharpen just part of it.
As you select parts of the image to sharpen, GIMP does its job automatically. You should see the image sharpen dynamically as you move your mouse.back to menu ↑
Paint.net is another free image editing tool that can accomplish a lot for free. Sharpening isn’t one of its strengths, but it credibly reduces blur in images.
Here is how to blur an image with Paint.net:
- Open the image in Paint.net.
- Select Effects, Image, and Sharpen.
- Move the slider in it Sharpen popup to a level that you are happy with.
- Select OK and save.
The Sharpen tool can then introduce noise into the image. You may be able to reduce that by using Effects and Noise Reduction. Adjust again until you are satisfied.back to menu ↑
Snapseed is an app from Google that works on both Android and iPhones. It is a full image editor that works on most newer devices and a very full one feature set. One thing that Snapseed does especially well is sharpen images.
This is how you get it done in Snapseed:
- Open your image in Snapseed.
- Select the Details menu option.
- Select Sharpen or Structure, then not blur or Show more details.
The combination of both Sharpen and Texture make a lot of difference in a blurry image. I usually first use Sharpen to remove as much blur as possible and then Texture to bring back the details.
This will take a bit of trial and error until you get the levels you like, but once you do, your image should be crystal clear and ready to go.back to menu ↑
Other online tools
There are two online tools that I know of to blur a photo. One of them is Fotor, a set of powerful online tools that can do many things. The other is Photo Sharpen, which does just that.
Fotor is a great photo editing suite that offers a range of free photo editing tools right from the website. There are also Pro tools for a fee, but for most of us, the free tools do enough. The tool itself is labeled as adding artistic blur to an image, but by using it and then reducing the blur you can use it like a pencil sharpener.
Use the Basic Tools in the left menu and then Basic in the second left menu. There is a sharpen slider to blur your photo.
Photo Sharpen is much less technical and does the job for you. It uses an algorithm to sharpen images. You upload your image and select Sharpen button. The website will do the rest. The result is a sharper image. You can’t fine-tune the results, but the site does a pretty good job of reducing blur.back to menu ↑
