How to Use Clipboard History on Windows 10 – Guide

Cutting, copying and pasting are typically the first three operations most people learn when they start using a computer, as the clipboard is such an important aspect of the operating system. It’s easy to forget that the notion of a clipboard had to be conceived in the early 1970s, when programmers Larry Tesler and Tim Mott built copy and paste. However, as practical as the clipboard is, it is limited in that it can only carry one object at a time. You can use clipboard history in Windows 10 to browse and paste the last 25 items you cut or copied.

This means you can quickly copy and paste multiple items to the clipboard, saving you the time and effort of switching between two applications to copy and paste many objects. It’s a little more complicated with a Mac. Since there’s no built-in clipboard history tool, you’ll have to use a third-party program to get the same functionality.

How to enable clipboard history in windows 10

To use clipboard history instead of just single item clipboard, you need to enable it first in Settings. It might be on by default, but it only takes a moment to check.

  • Click on the Start button button and then click Settings.
  • Click System.
  • In the left navigation pane, click Clipboard.
  • In the History section of the Clipboard, verify that the toggle is enabled by swiping it to the right.
  • To disable clipboard history feature, slide the toggle to the left to Disable.

How to view and use clipboard history

Once the clipboard history is enabled, you can view it by pressing Windows + V at any time in any program. You will see a pop-up window up, displaying the last 25 items that were copied or cut to the clipboard.

    Here’s what you can do:

  • To paste an item, scroll through the list and click on the item you want to paste at the current cursor position in the active program.
  • To pin a clipboard item to the history so that it remains even after restarting your PC, click the three dots to the right of the item and choose Pin.
  • To delete an item from the clipboard immediately, click the three dots to the right of the item and choose Delete.
  • To clear all clipboard history and start from scratch, click on the three dots to the right of the item and choose Clear All.
